Like the title says im wondering why carp crash the top of the water above my method balls. Every time i go out and with with method i always see a fish crash a couple times over where my bait is then i get a run. Any one know why they do this?

Great question Josh. hmmm I asked badchade about why carp crashed while we were at Emma. He had heard that the carp may be crashing to clear their gills during feeding or that it was a signaling to other carp that there was feeding going on. Both sounded very good to me. I'm curious to see if there are other theories out there.

could be water fleas or a parasite, could be they are cleaning their gills or they just could be excited over the food. No one really knows.

Well said. cheers

Sound like as good a theory as any. I know that I have at times struggled to catch fish with carp crashing all over the place. bang

when the fish stop crashing is when it gets iteresting for me. Seems like i catch bigger fish after all the crashing over my baited area has stopped.

The clearing the gills theory sounds pretty good to me, i always thought it was one carp letting all the other carp know that it has staked a claim to the food source underneath, but i have an over active imagination. There has to be some biological reason as to why they do this.

you know i think it them clearing there gills, and getting excited over the bait, in one of the korda videos it shows a carp doing that underwater. they said they thought it was becasue it was turned on to feeding.

I really don't believe the carp communicate in any meaningful way; they are instinct driven and can't conceptualize. I do believe they can learn thinks, but lets face it; a brain the size of a thimble doesn't have 'thinking' as we know it.

tell that to the carp across the pond...if they can learn, they can think...

I dont think a carp has a complex brain to "think "as we know it
But they can learn from a bad experience..i am pretty sure about that
And Some are smarter than others to...they learn from the other ones bad experiences
But some fish are more dumb then others
As far as fishjumping goes...I dont know there are so many kinds of "jump"but if the carp crash as josh said then I think they are happely feeding on 'something"but that does not have to be on your baits (lol) as I found out the last couple of weeks

I'll chime in on this one. Study the anotomy of a carp and you'll learn that they don't have a stomach. They have one long intestinal tract that digests food with enzymes.

My theory is that once the carp start filling their digestion tract with the goodies we put out there they jump clear of the water and crash back down to facilitate the movement of food through their tract allowing them to eat more.

Another thory of mine is that when they're feeding on the bottom below the thermocline in low oxygen water. They will open their mouths and swim for the surfact rushing lots of oxygen rich surface water over their gills in the process. This allows faster recovery so they can get back to feeding down below the thermocline.

+1 on the finger... and this also means -1 on the "I really don't believe the carp communicate in any meaningful way;" since they are taunting and laughing at you.
