just wanted to say i am new to tx i just moved to abilene and have been reading some post and looking foward to gaining lots more info on this site about tx fishing. i have been told where i am at that Fort Phantom Lake is about it unless i want to drive a few hours, any guys fish this lake with any success. i read something but it was sorta dated about a fishing tournment that happens on thursday evenings, thought i would check that out, oh yeah i don't have a boat yet, had one before i moved, but the owner decied to keep it, lol. any ideas what might be good around this area i was thinking a jon boat or canoe to help lower cost and the fact i might only get out a couple times a month if i am lucky, i am lucky, thanks in advance

Welcome to the forum, Not that it will help you much, but I spent my formulative years in Abilene been gone from there since 1989, but back in the day, you could go out to lake Kirby and catch carp, catfish and crappie pretty easily from the bank, in fact there used to be some huge catfish in that lake, they used to nail the heads to a post outside the lake keepers gate and they would be huge. Ive fished phantom before as well, however for the driving distance I allways found Kriby to be more productive... The bait house's around abilene used to see coagulated blood in containers and it was highly effective for catfish. Good luck, Laterz, dafanman

Welcome to West Tx (that would be anything west of Brownwood) and to the forum. You will see occasional posts on O.H.Ivie and every once in awhile something on Twin Buttes - those are the 2 hr drives your talkin about. Both are worth fishing, maybe a camping trip or somthing.
