My 2000 F-250 7.3L will not engage my back up lights on my trailer when I put it in reverse. I don't have a brake controller and have both the factory 4-flat and the large round plug at the bumper.

In order for my lights to work and for my surge brakes to release I have to turn the plug over and turn on my running lights.

HELP!!! What do I need to do to fix? I am sick of getting out and flipping the plug every time I need to back up.

nope, its not a fuse. I have already checked all of them. It hasn't ever worked since I have had the boat. (2 months)

Have you checked all the grounds on the trailer? It may also be that you need a convertor pin for your 7 pin to a 5 pin? What is the pin arrangement for the trailer?...

i dont believe you have power from the reverse lights in either of those plugs i had to tap into my reverse lights and wire it into a separate 6 pin plug i installed on my 2000

This is pretty much what I am thinking at this point. I haven't looked at the plugs yet, but hopefully I can add a jumper pretty easily.

i found a round to flat plug at autozone. has both 4 flat and 5 flat. you need 5 flat, because one wire goes the reverse to unlock the solenoid when backing.

I have a round to flat 5 already and it doesn't work. I am thinking that that portion of the plug isn't wired for power. I am thinking about just adding a jumper from my back up lights on the truck down to the plug. That way it will supply power to when I am in reverse.

that works too. used to have one wired into my black dodge. might pull your round plug apart and see if its wired correctly. i have had 2 in the past that were all backwards inside.

I think you need to take your 4 pin connectors off and replace it with a 5 pin. The wiring is the same on both and you should have one extra blue wire that will power your backup lights.

The Ford's blk/green wire is for backup lights. I don't know where that is on the trailer but its wired since you can find it by reversing the plug.

I'm guessing you already have a 5 pin plug on the trailer since you can get the backup lights to work by reversing the plug. That means you are activating the blue (outside) pin with your running lights.

I had the same problem when I bought my newest Skeeter...I have the same truck...2000 F-250....for some reason I think something is missing on this year model...no power to the reverse lights in the large plug..I solved the problem by tapping into the reverse light hot wire behind the tail light and running a wire down to the wire coming out of the back of the plug...have not had any problems since....

Thanks for the confirmation, I was thinking this was going to be the quickest way to get it straightened out.

Yeah by flippin it your just hitting a hot wire with the backup lights. Do they come on when you plug it up or when you actually put it in reverse. If comes on when you just plug it up then your for sure just hitting a hot wire with the reverse wire causing lights to come on. Good luck just run jumper wire pretty easy fix, that way.
