I'm actually a native to michigan, but im looking at taking a vacation and visiting some friends in texas in june, im interested in fishing for some gator gar and big catfish on rod and reel, I really don't want to hire a guide and im wondering if anyone would be able to give me some good spots to try, and where about I could launch my boat, what kinds of rigs do guys usually fish for the two and what bait works best, thanks in advance for any info you can give me

I like fishing for gar. I bank fish, so I am not sure where a good spot to launch a boat is. I use two different setups. For spotted, longnose, and smaller gator gar, I use a 2/0 treble hook under a float. I use a fingerling mullet on this setup. For larger gator gar, I use a 7/0 treble hook on a two ft steel leader. I fish off the bottom with a big mullet head. I have two big rods that I use, one with each setup. All gar put up a good fight and are fun to catch. Good luck when you come down.

what area are you visiting down here? That will help the guys with a more defined area as where to fish and how to fish!

Hey I would be glad to help you with that. Welcome to the site by the way. I fish for gator gar all summer long up here in East Texas, and I can show you some good spots. Let me know when you are coming down, and if it doesn't bother you I can try and go with you a couple days. If your looking to fish the rivers I can help you, that is where I have all of my experience. If you are more interested in lakes I won't be much help. Let me know if you are interested.
