I have always wondered about this lake, I dont live far at all. I know its 5mph only and lower, but is this a good bass fishing lake? It doesnt show up on my navionics program.

It was a heck of a largemouth lake...now mostly 8-12 inch bass. I was down there 2 weeks ago on a camping trip. The lake was still 4 feet low and the ramp barely functional. I have a 17.5 ft bass boat on a single axle trailer and still mananged to launch.

I spoke with a lot of other fishermen and the lake just hasn't produced any good sized fish for a couple of years. The pictures in the park office of good sized fish are dated 06'.

I enjoyed the trip and the park is special. The combo of low water for a long stretch and fishing pressure has caught up with the lake.

Could be all the 1/2lb perch eatin all the bass fry. My brother took his three boys and loaded the boat with them. They were so big you could'nt get your hand around them. He said them boys had a blast. He didn't say anything about the ramp, but he has a 17ft flat bottom.

Most of the time if you are catching a lot of small bass it is because some need to be taken out.

I have such fond memories of fishing that lake for trout on several occasions back in 1985 when I was living up in Central Texas. I took the back roads from Lampasas and left several hours before sunup and it was just a gorgeous drive.

Very nice park too. I've been through town a few times since, but really would like to take a trip up there this winter. Got to see them actually deliver the trout one time up there, and that was pretty cool to see the hatchery truck pouring them into the lake.

Has there been any rain up in those parts during the past month or is the lake still low up there?

Went there several times the past two-three years. I will tell you this....... Had a fellow Tff'er tell me about a friend of his that did a shock test (TP&W worker) and the State Record Bass is in that lake. Well, I did a little asking around when I was there myself and was told to hush hush, but it is true. They measured, weighed and inspected a bass that went over 19. Don't know why they want a hush hush because of the traffic that it would get to generate revenue for the parks dept. But either way, I didn't catch it but did do VERY well everytime I was there.

I think the 06' report is pretty close. my brother in law and i fised one day and hit a grass bed at the corner of the dam and caught about 100 bass including one just over 6 lbs. it seems to have been on a decline since then.

there is a good area in the middle of the lake about half way between the ramp and the north end (narrow) that has some brush and usually holds some bass.

I fished it at night last summer using a blue flake senko with a buddy and we caught about 30 on the north west bank.

I can't get my boat on yet but am hoping ths recent rain helps with that issue.

We have fished there for years, and the earlier comment about the bigger blugills is very true...I hooked both my kids especially my son , with that lake and those gills ! Now for the bigger fishin...the bass in front of the damn are there , a little mossy but I always catch nice ones. I have not ever been here and not caught catfish/ The biggest being a blue and cahnnels bite on the beach at dark on dead or live minnows, but take your own , aside from driving to whitney there is not a place to get any there. Take worms and catch smaller perch to catfish with or use those minnows , we always stay in a screen cabin , at the end of the road where the cabins are, there is a slew that is always productive for me with catfish. I think the last time we were there was our 7th time . Really love this place and the fishin is very cool.

If you don't really want to know, then don't ask me, because I will tell you !

the last time I fished the lake was in 2007. caught several up to about 4lbs, no giants. caught a decent day before the grass opposite the dam was grown in and every patch of grass had fish flipping a sweet beaver.

I heard that the ramp wasnt usable shortly after that as the water dropped to low, but dont know for sure.

This doesn't suprise me. On my first night in Cabin #6, I heard a couple of massive splashes in the small cove next to the cabin. Apparently, there was a large bass trying to kill off a few baitfish in that area. He/she came back the next evening about 2 hours after sunset. The only splash that mimics what I heard that night is a large striper. It was not a carp or other fish from my observations.

If you catch that big one, let me know. It appears to be purely a nocturnal feeder.

I still have to say that the NUMBER of bass over 3 pounds has dropped off significantly.

due to the small size of this "lake", it is designated as a community fishing lake, so the following rules apply:
. rod and reel only (no juglines, no trotlines)
. no minnow seines, no castnets
Also no wakes, so don't bust open those big gas motors.
