I'm in the market for a new crappie rod. Need help finding which lure rating size to fit my needs. I'm wanting one that is light, sensitive and has a good backbone. Price doesn't matter. Thanks!

Now that I got my St.Croix,I don't think I can go back to any other rod, they are that good!
If I have a guided trip, my customers use my pro anglers and bnm's, they are still a good rod and a bargain.

As my partner has found, I'm kinda hard headed and gotta cheap streak. Besides, like my brother used to say, I can beat ya with a house stick off the wall. (Pool shootin' days). Just give me a pink Barbie rod with a snoopy reel and I'll show ya what for.

Mack if we ever go fishin you can use my wife's St Croix and Shimano Sidestab. She will never know unless you break it. I'll buy the gas and you supply the knowledge. You will want one then. Best advice I can give you if you do not want to spend a hundred dollars is to never fish with one. thumb

I put in an order for the 7'6 st croix legend tournament rod earlier today. Should be in sometime this week. It was only $220 shipped.

I also have a 6'6 g loomis glx rod that I use to shoot the docks with. Awesome rod also!

I appreciate it BC1, I know they are fine rods but $230 is just plain nuts to me for crappie fishin'. I have a BPS Woo Daves $100 rod for my sigle line jiggin' and 2 BPS IM8 Rods that are very comfortable and sensitive. My buddy Joe has landed a 7 & 10# bass with his 8ft PA with no problem at all. As Mike said the other day during the TSCC, when your in 20+mph wind riding the waves sensitivity goes out the window. he didn't even bring them along during that tourny.
Let's hit the lakes if they don't close 'em down again.
We may have to go to Amarillo to find a dry lake to fish in.

Mack my St.Croix's were the $100 rod. I had been spending $20 on Berkley Cherrywoods. They are okay but my gosh these are awesome. I just found out about a trick rigging these that will make them even more productive. I ordered everything today. Thanks Guy!

As good as the St. Croix rods are and they are good the Dobyns rods are better and for the same money. I have used both and Dobyns is my choice. I have a 6'8" @ a 7' in their drop shot spinning rods both with Shimano Symetre 750 reels. IMHO the ultimate setup. I still have a bunch of Pro Anglers for spider riggin, but for vetical jigging it's the Dobyns.

If as you said, money does not matter, then surely go with the St. Croix. I use ProAngler and have tried all the traditional lower cost Crappie Rods, they all have good points. I really like my ProAngler rods very much, but when I can afford them I will change over to St. Croix. bouncy

Show me where I can buy a Dobyns for $100....the Premiers that everyone (including me) likes are $100. The Legend Tournaments are a different story though. I had a pair of the Dobyns Champion drop shot rods, they are crazy sensitive. Sold them to buy my Legend Tournaments...

Can't go wrong with St Croix!!!
All the rods I built are from either St Croix or Loomis mostly, mixed in with some Sage
If money is no object, then the Legend Elite is something to consider... If not, any St Croix is much greater than no St Croix

you didnt say what style of fishing so i would assume jig fishing vertical. i would call some buddies or ask tff members to test drive a few rods. if your close to lavon you can try out my selection.pro angler,b&m,wally, phlueger. everybody is different and will like something different. try jigging with the line in your hand. you can use a broom stick and catch more fish. you can feel any limb ,stick, rock, minnow seizure better in the line then you will in any pole. if you practice you will learn all kinds of new techniques and not set hooks on tree limbs.LOL. this time of year the walmarts, targets, toys r us have empty shelves with that one toy of the year that everybody is buying up becuase its the thing to do. to me that is the st croix rod. im not knocking the rod just dont buy the hype, buy the rod.if its best for you. good luck on your search and your are welcome to test drive any of the crappie poles i own if your in the lavon area.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; the St Croix is not for everyone. Some like broom stiks and some like buggy whips, and some like a USA made, professionally designed and manufactured fishing rod. Whatever brand rod anyone gets, I hope that you are happy with it.

It's not just the results that count, sometimes it's the pleasure in the journey. A good angler (or a poor one) can certainly catch fish on any rod but a good, sensitive rod is such a pleasure to use. I use the 7' $100.00 St Croix most of the time now and will soon get another but I also use other rods part of the time without a noticable change in the catch rate.

It's just a matter of personal choice. I have several different brands and when using a longpole don't really care which I pick up. It's when casting or vertically fishing brushpiles that I notice the most difference.

I reccomend the Wally Marshall Signature series 5'6" model @ around $40.00 or the Falcon 6' med lite model @ $60.00 range in addition to the St. Croix.

All of the above is good advice... for jigging, I use a lightweight 8' flyrod... When money IS an issue, use what you've already got and that's what I already had when I started crappie fishing. I've caught lots of fish on it and it's a blast when you hook something bigger. I have used much more expensive rigs that belonged to others and they do feel much better in your hand and are more sensitive... no question about it. But there's no way I'm dropping 100$ on a rod.

you may want to figure out what the application is going to be. vertical jig, jig and float, drop shot so on and then your price and expectations then decide what what is out there that meets those demands.

There are several great rod makers that make good rods, it is all in what you are really looking for and budget. American rodsmith makes agood line od rods as well.

St Croix also has the mojo bass line that is lower in price but has some nice rods that have a great feel and can be used in panfish applications that will not kill a budget. I have sveral of the St Croix rods and like them but as stated they are not for everyone. It is up to the person and what he truely wants and expect.

I love my BnM Sam Heaton Super Sensitive. I can feel when a crappie is looking at the jig. Really like the St. Croix's as well though just didn't know about them when I bought the BnM.

Though I plan to get a St.Croix, I have the shimano rods. I have the shimano crucial, and I tell you what, I LOVE that rod!!!!! I'd recommend that rod to anyone. Very light and sensitive. The st.croix that is as light as the crucial is the legend series. Both are great rods. Buy what doesn't hurt your pockets.

Just got me a Shimano Crucial rod. Love the way it feels in my hand and the stiffness of the rod. Haven't gotten any slime on it but I think I will try to get some tomorrow.

If you are wanting to not spend a fortune here are a few rods that I've tried and liked. Berkley Lighting Series, Berkley Cherrywoods but my favorite rod that is affordable is by far the Pro Angler rods. Nice backbone, lighter, more sensitive than most rods at that price. Great customer service in Ed too. I like the 8' cork handle rods personally. I also hear good things about Wally's signature series as well as some of the B&M's bu they aren't stiff enough for my taste.
