39 YFT Biggest around 85# +-

1 wahoo
1 Escolar
Eleventy Billion blackfin.

Fun trip. The bite was not hot but, staying at the rail and fishing hard put fish in the boat.
The Captain and crew did a fantastic job.

Big thanks to Margaritamojo for the machine and taking care of my needle/houndfish! haha

Needle fish bite hard. Don't ever taunt one of them. He took a nice bite into my arm. Kurtis snagged it and I was gonna help him get it off. I grabbed the shibukit with my pliers and that thing whipped around and latched onto my arm and was hanging by the meat on my arm. More of a surface wound than anything, but I bled like a stuck pig. Funniest thing on the trip. I caught a limit myself and several BFT. Gave a couple handoffs. One was caught on a purple OTI Komodo and the other 4 were on a sardine Shibuki. Lost one jig and one handoff broke off the shibuki during the fight. Had a great time, weather was great. Great bunch of guys to fish with.

Thanx for the Pix Dave and Congrats on the new Personal Best... nice YFT on a Jig.

I'll get a good one on a jig yet if the Makos will let me ge them to the gaff!

Did you or anyone catch any on Ballistic Flyers this trip?

I think there was one on Flyer, most topwater action came on the Shabiki lures and a black Tuna Hunter Jr was killing them in the last couple hours of the trip. I was pretty tough the first night though.
I spent most of the time speed jigging up football sized BF on the first night, then switched to popping with no luck. When I came back to the other side of the boat there were a bunch of YF coming over the rail with jigs. SO I drop mine down, jig up another mean little football who bent my jig realmad Well I dropped it again and said "Maybe this is the secret" and ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ goes the Torium 30 drag! About an eternity later I get it to the stern (well it got me to the stern) and it cuts across the back and crossed a few lines with it then mine went slack. I thought I got broke off but I couldn't recover any line and someone thought I was in the prop, but it wasn't taking any line. noidea Somehow the reel wasn't fully engaged and wasn't in freespool either. Well I found out the fish was still on when I engaged the reel and started reeling up. I think I got caught in the rudder or something in the back but I backed up and got it free. Another eternity later the fish was over the rail. thumb

We fished Boudreaux and Perdido the whole time, no bottom fishing, we trolled in the daytime for two YF and a Hoo. Brian got to kill a Cuda with a bat. woot

It just wouldn't be a TFF Tuna trip without Brian the Cuda Whisperer atttacting them toothy critters and keeping Davy Jones Locker supplied with a bounty of fresh New jigs! rolfmao

Dave if you can find one get you a Penn 113 HN Baja (factory Metal frame 25# Drag).. blows the Torium away as far a jigging goes. My daughter landed a 50 and 80# YFT on my Penn 113HN Baja/ Bar Bar Custom Jig Rod rig in around 5 minutes each. That should end your eternity at the rail!

After Quatro Tuna my Torium 30 only put out 12# of drag maxed out.. those 6 big YFT we got on the Frenzy Ballistic Flyers smoked the drags.

Thanks for the report/ Info!
cheers

I swear the cuda's had the big eye on Brian. They would sit right in front of him. He would move down the rail and they would follow him. No kidding. He started jigging bft while sitting down to minimize the eye to eye contact. I think they wanted revenged on the sacrafice.

When I say I thoroughly enjoyed this trip, you dont know how much of an understatement that is. I appreciate the opportunity to get a spot on Ocho Tuna and cant say enough about what a great bunch of fisherman y'all are. The Capt's and crew were awesome too and man, do those guys work hard!

As a tuna newbie, I dont mind hearing "follow that line!" more than once. Its hard to remember in the heat of battle even if it was them pesky BF. I'm still a YF virgin but it will happen for sure as there is no way this will be my last trip. Learned a lot of great information on this trip and it will be useful next time.

Did get to see someone (sorry, too many names to remember) get his YF cherry popped. It was a riot hearing "WE GOT A VIRGIN, GET THE HEART!". Watching mate Darryl (way funny guy) dive in there with his knife, bury his hand in the tuna looking for that heart was something you dont soon forget. Only wish I had that on video.

I've posted a couple videos and have some others that I will get out as promised, just may take a day or so more. Got a son with an 18th bday today so you know the priorities. Wait till y'all see the Scat Cat jacuzzi clip. It's a riot but may make PETA a little mad. smile

Looking forward to Nueve Tuna! (Dang, is that year away?)

you actually got a video of that bloodbath? I can't wait to see it!
I'm not worried about PETA unless you've got any "assault w/ a deadly weapon" video. that might portray me in a bad light, especially to the cuda-huggers. violin

This was by far the best bunch of fisherman and just people of good character, well some sort of good character grin, I have fished with. It was the first trip where you werent worried about your lures walking off (had that happen more than once)and such nonsense while you fished or slept. Caught fish on the chunk for the first time and I really appreciate the lesson on how to do that properly. Still vacume packing tuna tonight dang work is hindering that process.

That's the bleed out slurry, and yes, they often have to be persuaded to calm them down so the meat is not too bruised.

Man it looks like y'all had a helluva time. On those Tuna trips do you have to take your own gear or it just preference over the gear that is supplied? Also what is the cost to go on the trip? The wife and I were talking last weekend and we may be interested in Tuna Nueve!!!

650.00 for the trip. They do supply a rod and reel that could be used for chunk fishing or live flyers, but most bring their own gear.

I didn't know what Ronnie was talking about so I googled it.

"Like its relative the oilfish (Ruvettus pretiosus), escolar cannot metabolize the wax esters (Gempylotoxin) naturally found in its diet, which accumulates to give an oil content in the muscle meat of 18–21%. These wax esters may rapidly cause gastrointestinal symptoms following consumption; however, these effects are usually short lived.

The gastrointestinal symptoms, called "keriorrhea", caused by these wax esters may include oily orange diarrhea, discharge, or leakage from the rectum that may smell of mineral oil. The discharge can stain clothing and occur without warning 30 minutes to 36 hours after consuming the fish. The oil may pool in the rectum and cause frequent urges for bowel movements due to its lubricant qualities and may be accidentally discharged by the passing of gas. Symptoms may occur over a period of one or more days. Other symptoms may include stomach cramps, loose bowel movements, diarrhea, headaches, nausea, and vomiting.

To minimize the risk of symptoms, strict control of portion size is recommended as well as preparation methods that remove some of the oil. Grilling will greatly reduce the heavy fat content in the fish making it edible without ill side-effects. Portions should be no greater than 6 ounces."

YIKES bolt

Yeah, the fish was "donated" to a biologist for taste test... ahem testing. Hope they did thier research and know about portion control. Capt said all the paperwork was sent in, hopefully will be getting a certificate sometime soon.

Congrats on the escolar. I had the previous state record and you beat it by several pounds. The escolar is eaten frequently as sushi. I shared mine with several other people with no ill effects. It is a very mild meat that is extremely white and as long as you don't eat too much, it is great sushi. What's a little oily discharge amongst friends...LOL.

Congrats on the catch. I caught mine on a butterfly jig down around 700 feet or so, just wondering how you caught yours.

Looks like that record didn't stand very long, as Scat Cat came
back this weekend w/ a 32#'er from the TBB trip.
What's the deal w/ all this escolar being caught?
I know the one Kevin caught was down around 250' when he hooked up on a Benthos jig

Isn't an escolar a mackerel rather than a tuna? Not trying to seem trivial, but I haven't had my morning dose of coffee yet and am feeling nitpicky!

coffee
