I think fall is the best time for reds in Texas....but really any time you can go is a good time. We have one of the world's greatest flats area down on the Laguna Madre and it can be great for shallow water reds....but if I had to pick the very best place I know of it would be the Indian River out of Titusville Florida. Year around outstanding red fish on the fly with shots at really large fish.

Oh I have to agree with the above statement, I posted real quick and logged off without fully getting into what I wanted to say. If you are looking to go and have a great time and catch your first redfish on fly, you can't beat the LM. You stay in Texas and you can find some pretty good deals on hotels if you look or just camp out.

True treasures and much prettier than Louisiana...plus thirty and forty pound fish on the flats year round...

Posting a video like that when I'm stuck in Amarillo in a hotel is just cruel and unusual punishment.

I have avoided the Saltwater Fly Fishing forum for a long time because I feel like I don't want to get bit by this bug.
Looks like I've got some problems now.

I've got to give it to Louisiana. I've fished there with Capt. Bryan Carter and have seen some great water - filled with fish ready to boost confidence levels beyond rational levels. In the total of about 10 days I've spent on the water there over the last 3 years, I've seen one boat that was fishing. It's close and cheap, too.
However, wade fishing for tailing reds on the Texas flats always gets me excited.

now that i think about it the guides in Destin, Florida say the reds are eating like crazy in the fall right off the beaches The redfish do that here too, the big bulls get right up in the surf and can really provide some crazy action if you get into them. However last year the red tide arrived perfectly timed to mess most of that time period up. Woo.

for your first trip i would highly recommend just staying in texas. the fish aren't as big lots of 15-25" fish with the occasional fish pushing 30". but anywhwere from port oconner to port isabel is pretty good. you'll have the opportunity to cast to on average a dozen fish a day. take a look for capt tom horbey out of port o'conner he's pretty good.

^I've gone twice with Scott and I highly recommend him if you wish to stay in Texas. But you did ask for the best place, so I'd personally go for Louisiana or Florida
