I've been meaning to ask, why was Beto fishing a wire leader? Had he seen the 'hoo? I was fishing for tuna so had straight mono.

Surface Iron is known to attract Toothy Critters like Baracuda as well as Kings and Sharks.. which we all know like to hang out on shrimp boats. So very few folks fish Surface Iron without wire in the Gulf.

Beto is a seasoned offshore fisherman with deck hand experience out of San Deigo.. he was rigged with surface iron & wire before we got to the boat.

Thanks Bazz. Would you likely have as much success on a tuna with the wire leader? I confess I have never fished surface iron; maybe the leader doesn't hang in the water?

Main reason I ask is I got some Rangers for my next tuna trip in Sept and if Barracuda are a problem (aren't they always?) I would like to rig with wire IF it's not likely to affect YFT bite.

I think the Coffee colored Malin single wire would be OK away from the boat.. it might turn off the Tuna in the brite lights near the boat but that is where the Cudas hang out anyway. If you plan to use them trolling I don't think the wire would matter either.. I seen YFT up to 90# taken on Braid Runners and Youzuri divers with a wire leader on the troll anyhow.

When the BFT are on a wide open bite I don't think it would matter one bit! nuts

I was wondering the same thing!! I hope its not an indication of a poor trip. Lots of experienced guys on the trip.

Word is they caught around 30 YFT, biggest was 120 lb range, bunches of BFT, and a bigger escolar (sp?) than the pending record caught last week.
They had a great time, just not as good tuna fishing as Ocho, but a great bunch of guys were on the trip.
Subuki's were the ticket from what I was told.
Sure Gal16 and Bazz will post up and give a report.

Got a brief report from Allen; he said they caught some nice tuna during the day chunking. I think we are wasting our time trolling on these trips, and need to be doing the same ol' same ol', night or day, if out for tuna.

As I said before, it works in Venice, it should work here also. They just have something against doing it.

Even when the trolling is good, you still have 20 guys and 4 trolling positions. One trip out of DD I saw Californian catch a AJ in excess of 100 lbs off Boomvang during the day and a large cuda for chunking saving some blackfin. I agree with mojo and jig the same old same old produces even in daytime.
