I'm looking to catch some flounder on a fly rod on my next trip to the coast. What are your favorite flies for targeting flounder?

Weeeeeell you can catch'em on a variety of flies, anything that gets down near the bottom really. Flounder Candy, heavy clousers, and other heavily weighted flies.

Agreed. I've had my best luck on Clousers with big dumbbell eyes that were all flashabou instead of bucktail. Best was fishing the cuts on the falling tide.

In my opinion it's more how you work the fly, low and slow, than any particular fly pattern being successful. Flounder are opportunistic predators so something that resembles a fishy/shrimpy moving critter that is close enough to their mouth is probably going to get swiped at. The main problem is getting the fly to the fish - heavy fly and intermediate line, perhaps even a sinktip.

Honestly, IMO, you're better off using bait for flounders...mud minnows or such. I just haven't had much luck at all catching 'em on a fly...but I agree with wader_noob's post if you're intent on using the fly. Good luck.

Go ahead and match the bait that is milling around on the bottom in the area that you are fishing and work it slowly near the bottom...fish directly under big schools of mullet or other bait fish with a fly that is just a bit different than the average bait fish size..either bigger or smaller...size difference will get you noticed.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll tie up some Clouser Minnows and Epoxy Shrimp with some extra lead in them.

That oughta do the trick - can't have too many clousers. Definitely agree with Mickfly on the using a lot of flash in your flounder fly of choice, depending of course on the visibility and light penetration in your locality.
