if i bought 12' surf rod made for a baitcaster... and i put my spinning reel on it... would that effect my fishing performance...at all??

yes. you will not to be able to cast as far.

the lower guides (closer to the butt of the rod) on a spinning rod are larger, and thus, decrease the friction as the line passes through the guides.

since baitcasting rod have small lower guides, it will restrict the line when coming off of the spinning reel

Not an expert by any means but my thinking is the guides on baitcast rods are much smaller than the guides on spinning rods. This is because how the line comes off the spinning reel.

I have to think your casts would be much shorter than if you had the proper set-up...

Also, When fishing with a spinning rod, the rod is held in such a way that the eyes are always facing downwards. With a casting rod, the eyes are always facing upwards when fishing. Each rod is built in order to bend & flex with the rods in these noted positions. Casting rod would not flex right with a spinning reel on it.

Buy you an Abu Garcia 7000C reel for that surf rod and you will solve the problem.

another thing worth noting . spinning rods are designed to be reeled in upside down and bait casers right side up . it has a funny feel to it using shorter rods like 6 fters .imagine how it will feel with the totally much longer rod . totally awkward .

Thats what I use on the lake when I fish from the bank. I have a Daiwa bait cast surf rod with a abu bait reel. I find it better to use. I can cast that my bait out a lot futher than my spinning set up. It takes practice, but at the end, when you can get about 40 more yards out, its worth it. Just don't use it at the Dam...LOL...cause if you gets a birds nest, it'll make you pretty mad down there.

no way you can cast with a baitcast rod using spinning cast reel. Prob go 20 yards with a "bbbzzzzz" sound due to frixtion. If you like the blank that much, buy it then strip out the guides and replace with spinning guides. Also strip out the reelseat and replace with a spinningcast reelseat. I did that to 2 rods and it worked out great! Especially my 7.5 flipping bass rod. Now turned into a spinning popper rod for stripers.

I find it harder to use a baitcast surf if you are using it with lures. much better for soaking live or dead bait.

baitcast surf = longer distance (if you know how)
spinning surf = ease of use and more versitile

academy has some half way decent spinning surf rods for like 25-40 $ i think they are made by tsunami looked to be a good deal!
