I have been using synthetics some for the tails of some of my jigs. Before I would just take out a small bit of what I needed from the bundle. The problem here was I would have all different sizes and ended up wasting materials.
So here is my solution:
1. Separate your material close to the "bundle point" where the material comes together (sometimes a stapled, sometimes fused together.
Make the bundle as many strands as you want in your jig tail.
2. Take a small piece of black tape and wrap the strands up close to the bundle point.
3. Take the strand and place it on the hook when tying with the taped end AWAY from the head of the jig, thus wasting no material.
