The toilet in my kids bathroom is backing up for no apparent reason? There is no paper or toys in the toilet. I pulled the toilet and changed the wax ring already tonight. I even ran a snake down while the toilet was pulled. But if you flush it 2-3 times it will back up int he bowl? What woudl cause this. I really dont want to have to call someone out if it is something simple.

You just purchased a new (different) home, didn't you?

Call a plumber and have all the lines run from the toilets to the street.

Then save up your $$$ and remember to do it every 24-30 months or so.

Does the bathtub also drain slow? It may be a clogged vent.

Are you on city sewer or septic tank?

Okay, I'm about to hit the sheets, but we had something similar at the lake house and it was on a septic...What had happened is people were flushing the 'Rid-X' (don't use this product by the way) in the toilet furthest from the tank...It wasn't able to flush all the way down the line and crystalized just before the kitchen sink drain...Fortunately, either the realtor or the previous owner paid for it because we didn't even pay the deductible or file a claim with the warranty company...

get a water hose and after you remove toilet fill the line then try to plunge it. if not rent an auger and go thru vents and clean out. it is usually cheaper and safer in the long run to have an plumber do this though.

older home? Could be clay pipes and if there is a tree close to the line running to the curb then you have roots in your line.

If I remember correctly, you get one clean-out per warranty period (year) for your deductible. Read the policy you were given at Closing _before_ the service person gets to your home and understand what is covered and what is not. The service person gets paid extra on the up-sell.

Welcome to your new home..... smile we've all done it.... eek

When I was a Texas-licensed real estate sales person I had my own copy of "The Money Pit" for my new clients. Just so they'd know what they were getting in to....

It's actually not that bad of a problem, one time roto-rooter or whatever then epsom salt every so often.

Sounds like maybe you have a toy or "item" in you toilet trap itself

Easy to diagonse

Pull toilet, sit up on block and pour 2 gallons of water into the bowl a few times. See if it blocks or backs up.

Then while toilet is pulled, Grab a water hose and run water down the "Closet Bend" or the hole in floor where the toilet sits. Let it run a few minutes and see if it backs up.

I would say 90% of the time when I see the Issue you are talking about, I would say the toilet is bad or has some type of Forgein object stuck in the toilet.

If you run the water hose in the pipe. Think cross-connection. grin

Plumbers cam out today and the clean out was dirty. They ran the snake and did not pull out any roots or anything. They said since the house has sat for a few months it was clogged.

Is there anything I can put down the drain to help keep roots out?
