If you do not mind some dirt work and a sore back it aint that bad. Just get the design right. If it is not designed right your heads may not even pop up. when the time comes, we will definately rent a trencher.... my wifes grandfather has installed 7 systems an according to my F-I-L he knows what hes talking about so we'll find out this spring. Call DigTest out before trenching your yard. Free service, they will locate all your utilities and mark them. +1

I would recommend the rainbird weather station for your controller. I have installed several this year and they are worth every penny. It regulates wind speed , humidity, calculates rainfall. It accounts for you yards slope, soil conditions and regional settings. so in a nut shell it only waters when and were you need it to , saving you money..... for example zones 1-4 may water on monday but zone 5-6 will not. Please do not underestimate a sprinkler system. It is not hard but their are many little things that can happen, such as a ground problem or worse a broken wire. also be sure to use primmer it is an important part of fusing the pipe together many people try to skip this and it will come appart eventualy. however that is good for business lol.
P.S. VERY LABOR INTENSIVE

Let me start by saying I am a liscensed irrigator. You are recieving very good and not so good info, I have seen several diy that i had to redo,Lowes and Rain-Bird will give you a design, but keep in mind they are in the business of selling product.. An individual can install his own system however he needs an irrigator or plumber to tie into the main, permits and rules also have changed depending on location ie. city county and your local water purveyor. I would be glad to answer any questions. Greg 817-401-7397

Have you designed your zones yet? One thing I wish mine had done was set up separate zones just for watering the flower beds.
I have big beds in front of the house and around the trees that are just watered by normal sprinklers. The flowers need water more often than the grass so I have to do it with the hose.

That has been an issue for a while. Especially during the building boom. Crews throwing in 10-15 systems a day don't care much for watering efficiency. That should be changing with the new rules, enforcement of those rules, and irrigation inspections.

Systems should have always been designed that way. Now some cities require inspections that make sure they zones are seperated.

Who else besides a TCEQ licensed irrigator can install an irrigation system? The following people can install an irrigation system and are exempt from the TCEQ licensing requirements
Licensed Plumber Licensed Engineer Owner of a business that employees a licensed irrigator to supervise irrigation work. Home owner at his/her residence Employee of a railroad if the work is on railroad property.
Employee of a political subdivision working on public property Property owner’s associations if the work is less than one-half acre in size and is used for aesthetic or recreational purposes.
Work that is performed by a person that is not required to be licensed must meet the standards set by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality or the local area. The more stringent rules or ordinances must be followed.
