catfishman, I would start simple if I were you.
Two cans of Sweetcorn - use a size 6 or 8 hook, 8 - 12 pound test, carolina-rig with 1/2 oz - 2 oz weight (depending on how far you think you need to cast, etc.).
Throw the contents of one of the cans out where you think the carp are, and wait for about 1/2 hour. Then put 3-4 kernals of corn on the hook, making sure you leave the point free. Cast it to where you chummed the can of corn, loosen your drag (or use a baitclicker if you have it) and wait. If you don't see any signs of fish (mudding, breaching, etc) then wait. If you see signs, but somewhere else, go there and repeat.
Some like using breadballs as well. These are both good options and much simpler than trying to make your own boilies right off the start, IMO.
