I recently bought a couple of 7oz. snapper slappers to try the next time i go out. At $9.50 a piece i'm hoping to not lose them. I know sometimes you cannot help it but what type of leader material do yall use on these? Heavy mono, or braided steel? Stainless steel? Again, i'm probably gonna be looking to catch some grouper at a deep rig, but I want to do more than this. I was told that snapper slappers are very versatile lures that can be trolled as well as jigged and casted. Any suggestions?

I use snapper slappers all the time, they are great lures. I always put a sardine on it and drop it to the bottom, never fails! I actually make my own leaders with steel wire, they are very easy to make. I make them in different lengths, from 12" to 36". Snappers and Groupers will try to get you into the rig, so the steel will help protect you.

If I'm bottom fishing for snapper and aj's then just use an 80 or 100 lb. mono leader. If trolling then I'll use a steel leader like that used for kings.

I've only had one bit off of the mono. Probably by a large shark.
