Sorry for a beginner's question.

Yes and No.. As long as you keep the drag set at around 12# or less it will handle it. Problem is 12# of drag won't stop many fish over 30# and you will be in for a long fight if you get an AJ or Yellow Fin over 30# and any decent sized Grouper will break you off on the bottom.
You can use it for Blackfin and Smaller bottom fish/ Snapper.. Problem is Jigs attract fish of all sizes. I stuck a 150# Reef Shark about 250ft down and it took 30 minutes with a TLD 25 Shimano and 30# class Rod.. you just can't put pressure on a fish with 10-12# of drag.

I recommend a 6ft 60# class Bar-Bar Custom Jig Rod (Ebay) and an Avet HooX / HXJ 5/2 reel spooled with 80# Power Pro line... you can run 20-25# of drag and put a whoopin on the fish.

30 lb rod can mean lots of different things. If you mean a 15-30 lb live bait rod...no. If you mean a 30 lb glass igfa rod...yes. A 30 lb composite butterfly rod...yes. There are lots of 30lb rods out there. It all depends on the type and construction of the rod you are going to use.

See below for a suggestion on a jigging/bottom setup that will handle whatever you want to catch with it.

I posted this in a previous post but it will apply here as well:

Penn 113HN Baja Special, if you can find one. Grease the drags and hammer down the wheel. Spool up with 130 lb braid. Put it on a xxh 500g jigging rod(spiral wrapped if you can get one custom made) and winch anything you want off the rig.

Bar Bar makes some bad arse rods! you can contact him, and tell him what your target species is, and how much drag you wanna fish- and he can direct you to what he thinks will fit your needs.

my preference for jiggin is a 400-500gram superrod(parabolic rod designed to be strong and superlight) about 5'6" long, and a spinning reel capable of 22# of sustained drag. 65# braided line, and a 3' leader of 100# flouro.
