I will be on a party boat to try some deep sea jigging next week. I have no idea about how to setup my rig. Any suggestion about the line, rod, lure and techniques will be really appreciated. Has anyone done it? Do I need braided line? Please share your experience.

I have 50lb mono on most of my reels. Attach to a 200 lb swivel and then 80 to 100 lb clear mono for leader.
It's plenty to bring up amberjack and grouper. Snapper are out of season.

I use 50lb Dacron on my reels and then add 80-100 Floro leader unless it's toothy critter time then I go with Steel.

Thanks a lot, Mike. So how much line do you put on? 100 yards? My reels are spooled with about 300 to 400 yards or more. Depends on the size of the reel.

Just got back from fishing where we did some livebait fishing for AJs.I have never been whipped as I was fishing for these fish .We were using 100# braid ,200# leader and still could not get one in the boat. The reason I mention the above is that you never know whats going to hit your lure or jig.If possible , most jiggers go with braid as you can put more line on your reel.Yor jig will almost certainly get to the depth faster due to the fact of the smaller diameter and the tide will have a minium effect and you can use stronger line (80# Vs 50# mono)which certainly give you an edge and alittle more drag especially arond structure. best of luck and catch a monster

Try "Amber-jerking"...use very heavy tackle, leave the rod in a rod holder. Once hooked up, hammer the big motor(s) and drag the jack away from structure. Then begin the fight.

I just got back from TBB. I did not even use my 40# reel. I use an Accurate 665, 80# braid, 60# topshot. It is almost as light as my 40# rig, and you never know what is going to bite you.
