who on here sells tires? I need a set for my 2008 gutless ford f150 5.4. I am needing the 20" tires. the tires I have now are the 275/55/20 and the the pirelli scorpions, the worst set of tires I have even been around.
poor traction wet or dry, vibrate and just a really bad tire. this truck is a lease and I dont want to spend a whole lot.
I pull a boat very often and very rarely go off roading....

I don't sell them but I'm about to buy a set of tires in the same size for my Tundra. I'm looking at Bridgestone Dueler HL Alenza and BF Goodrich Long Trail T/A. The Duelers are $169 at Discount Tire and the BFG's are $167. Have you used the search feature on DiscountTire.com and read the reviews? Their are 150-200 per tire on most tires. Here's a link to that size tire. I'm all ears if anyone posts any better deals.

The reviews I've read about the terra grapplers mostly seem to indicate that they're a cheaper version of the toyo tires but are a really good tire, as long as you don't expect to get more than 40k out of them.

The nitto's are great tires. I have several friends that swear by the pro comp's as well as Coopers, but I have no personal knowledge of them. I just put 270/55/20 Falkens on my F150. Not my first choice of tire, but I had a blowout, needed new tires and was short on cash. I got them at Discout Tire for $480 out the door including mounting and balancing. I've had them for about two months and so far have had no problems. I've had no issues with traction so far, but did read several reviews that were negative because of the traction.

I just need some tires that will last me another year and a half or so. my lease will be up and I will get me a used 2006 or 07 F250. this is the worst truck I have ever owned...
I want good wet traction for the rain and dealing with a slick ramp.

What's wrong with your F150? I have an 07 FX4 that is the beat truck I've ever had.

Interesting because the 08 5.4L is the 3valve and has more horses than the 97-03 5.4L 2valve. As stated what gears do you have? Did you get the towing package? What are you towing? 20" rims take a bit of power to turn as well. There are some inexpensive things you can do to improve the power.

There are at least 3 combinations that come to mind with the tow package. 331 standard axle, 355 limited slip and 373 limited slip. You'll know it if it's the 373 LS because fuel mileage will suffer. Something sounds wrong if your having problems. How many miles is on it? It being a lease vehicle you probably hadn't done any mods but had to ask. 2010 Ford was planning on having a 6.2L V8 gas and a 4.4L V6 diesel as options for the F150 maybe a good time for a trade. The 5.4L has alot of low end torque and really shines when it comes to towing not so much on the high end. Sounds like yours is having issues but since it's a lease and sounds like you are getting out of it soon not sure I'd put a whole lot into it. What kind of air filtration are you using? Have you been cleaning the maf routinely? Kinda would like to know mileage.

it has had issues with power since new. it only has 25,000 miles. but no modifications at all since it is a lease. I just need some tires to get me through next year. the 20" tires are a new one for me. I think think it has something to do with the tires but ford highly spoke of the 20" tires.
I run amsoil synthetic oil and change the air filter every 2 oil changes.
even without a trailer behind it, it just seems like there is no power. I may take it to Bill Utter later this week and see what they can find?

Yea definately take it to the dealer it isn't broken in good yet. I drive an 08 E250 w/5.4L with 50k service van everyday and I don't carry as much equipment tools and parts as I used to but I've pulled the boat with it a few times and it handles it just fine. I have a 97 F150 5.4L with a little over a 100k that has hauled the boat, 16' livestock trailer, utility trailer with 75hp John Deere and it handled it all fine. I did a homemade cold air intake mod and added a programer and added life to it that I never knew it had. Wished I would have done that a long time ago. But the bigger the wheels like 20"s will affect power issues as well as limits the kind of tires available. I read a post some time ago from another member here that when he bought his truck he requested they put 17"s on it just for the fact that the tires were a lot less expensive and had better choices in brands and types. amsoil is an excellent choice as long as you stay with the 5-20w. I always clean the MAF everytime I change the airfilter be very careful doing so and remember to pull the neg cable off the batt. Yea see what the dealer says especially if you tell him the reason you bought the thing with a 5.4 is for the towing power and from your past experience like with your 03. Not to mention how disapointed you are and will consider all of this when it comes time for your next purchase. I would be interested in hearing what the dealer says.

Yep mass air flow sensor and it's in the airbox downstream of the airfilter. Remove the neg cable off the battery. They make a MAF cleaner or electrical contact cleaner will work. Spray it down be careful not to touch it. Looks like a fine wire very delicate I've seen guys clean theirs with a q-tip and alcohol but I prefer the spray cans. Give it time to dry make sure to leave neg cable off for 15 to 20 minutes to fully reset the pcm and it's keep alive memory. You want the pcm to re-learn all of it's fuel air strategies etc. One thing I tell the guys that work for me is the only stupid question is the one that goes un-asked.

If your getting rid of the truck in a year I would just look for some used tires. U might be suprised what you find. Some discount tires carry used tires as well as local tire shops. I saw a lot of used tires on eBay, but then you have to deal with shipping. Craigslist might be an option.

Hey 97fordnut,
Do you have to remove the MAF? I just spray mine down with it inside the housing. We are getting away from tires here. I agree with the rear end talk. I have an 01 Supercrew 4x4 5.4 with 3.55 LS rear end. It tows my Ranger fine but I hate that motor. I have had nothing but trouble. I do not know how the 3 valves are but I think with the 2 valves there were a lot of bad ones. Back to tires, these trucks are tire eaters. I swapped out the factory tires for Pirellis on day 3. The Pirellis went 27k. I then got some BFGs that went 40k. I now have some Definitys that might make 30k. I have the same tires on a Sporttrac and they will probably make 60k.

I just take the airbox loose from the elbow and remove the diffuser and stick a rag up behind it and sray it down good with the CRC brand MAF cleaner. The rag is for soaking up the overspray. I guess every so often there is a trouble some truck from all manufacturers. I was told my 97 was the fifth one sold in Dallas county with the 5.4 and had one issue with it the first couple of months I owned it. Fortunatly the mechanic working on mine was having the same problems. Long story short they plugged a datalogger into mine and I drove it around for a weekend to Lake Fork pulling the boat and they sent the datalogger to the engineers and they sent back 4 new o2's and maf. Never had a problem since. 00 to 01 they made a slight change in the head design calling it a PI head actually giving the 5.4 10-15 more hp. The 3 valve is supposed to have 30 more hp than the 2 valves. We have 5 E250's anywhere from 02 to 08 with the 5.4 but I recently found out that Ford still mfg's the 2 valve and that's what goes into the E250 the only one that has been a problem was the 02 and it launched 3 different plugs because the dealer didn't follow the TSB when they replace them used antiseize and didn't torque them tight enough. We bought another 08 with a 4.6 because the tech elected the electronic package over the 5.4 w/o cruise. Now that is a gutless wonder and never would recomend this package to anyone the truck is just to heavy. The 08 I drive paired against the one 06 Chevy with 4.8 will run off and leave it while the 08 with 4.6 just waves. This did turn into a hyjack. Getting back on track I've heard horror stories about Pirellis and amazed because they are made by the same people that make Michelin. The Goodyear Wranglers that came on my 97 made it till 47k. Then I bought the Liberator A/T's from Wally World and put 50k on them. When it come time to replace them I come real close to going with the BFG Long Trails because Wally wanted $110 for the new Lib's I talked to the guy at W.W. about what kind of deal he could make me and he said $85 plus rh, valves rotate bal etc. I was like go for it since I had good luck before. When it came time to settle up he said I'm going to make your day and he charged me $74 plus all the other. I asked if he had another set but he said not in stock but he could get them. I come close to getting 4 more at that price just to throw in the garage. That would have been 2 sets for the price of one BFG's. Oh well the spiders have enough stuff around hear to live in anyways. I usually rotate and bal them every 6k so that has alot to do with the life of them as well. wow this got long winded.

Check around the Pilot Point area the small town tire shops usually have pretty good tires now and then. 1/2ton trucks are not real good at pulling out of ramps. Maybe throw a few bags of cement in the bed. I had an 86 F150 and had to use the boat motor to help me get out most places. Takes two though and you need to be quick on trim if your scag hits while motor is down.
