So the wife and I took some small hooks, mealworms and ultralight tackle to a local pond that has a very aggressive and large (in size) population of bluegill/sunfish. There are also a few surprises in there like some 3-4lb bass and even some tilapia.

About 20 minutes into our day I was looking into the water from the pier (polarized sunglasses on of course) and freaked out after seeing two beautiful orange and white koi dart by. I immediately cast my mealworm under a bobber perfectly in front of them and further freak out as one of the koi darts towards my bait. Before he makes it there one of the 11 million perch in this pond grabs my hook and off he goes.

Since I have yet to catch a koi this turned from a relaxing day fishing into 6 hours of casting at these koi and fighting turtles and perch. LOL hammer

The fact that the koi stuck around as long as they did taught me something though. They know when the turtles and perch around the pier get riled up and seem to come looking for the handouts as well...very likely bread, which I didn't have. Nearly every time I made a reasonable cast that didn't spook them one of the koi would go for the bait, but it would always be grabbed by the smaller fish before the koi would grab it. Finally after maybe 4 hours I got a clear shot and the bigger of the two koi grabbed my worm...of course the excitement of the situation made me try to immediately set the hook and not get the fish. I believe I shed a tear. violin

So, tomorrow I will return with bread, tiger nuts and some small boilies. I REALLY wanted to catch one of these koi on the ultralight gear by casting to them instead of the traditional toss out the bait and wait for them to find it method. I am hoping a handful of tiger nuts and maybe a few small boilies will keep them around long enough to pick up the one with the hook in it!
