I don't want to spend the $1K on a stella, but was rather looking to spend around $500 on the rod and the reel. I've heard several different opinions, but I'm leaning toward a Shimano Saragosa 18000 and a Daiwa Saltiga Jigging Rod.
I'd be targeting AJ's, Grouper, and Large Tuna.

Does this sound like a suitable setup or should I go higher end? I've heard good things about the OTI rods, but I'm really hesitant about shellin out close to 3 bills for a rod I'd be using about 3 or 4 times a year.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I've used Penn spinning reels for years and found them to be rugged and dependable.

I have a Penn 650SSM and a 950SSm, both on 7ft Penn Slammer rods in 40lb-50lb class. The reels run under $200 each and the rods are around $100 each. Both have brought many a large fish to the boat.

I prefer conventional reels for bottom fishing for AJ's, grouper and the like. Shimano TLD 25's or Penn 113's or 114's work great for this. Match them with a 30-80lb class 6ft rod, 50 lb line and you're in business.

shimano spheros 18000 and an OTI 7'6" 80# spinning stick. light rod, but enough arse to handle the big dawgs! you can pack a truckload of 65# braid on the 18000. upgrade the drag washers to carbontex from www.smoothdrag.com and you are ready to plaY!

I can't comment on the Saltiga rod, but the Saragosa is a great choice, By the time you have upgraded the Spheros (drags, bearing, handle), you have paid for a Saragosa. The handle on the Spheros sucks, and the Saragosa handle that fits is close to $80 and the Stella handle is about $140. BTW, I know this because I have several upgraded Spheros.
