Anybody have a good engine they are wanting to sell? Pulled the boat to Choke last weekend and noticed a slight nock when I pulled up to the ramp. Checked the fluids and everything was fine. Seems I have either spun a rod or main bearing or it's fixing to go pretty soon. I got 150k miles on my 2003 Silveradon and it's been a good truck. Was hoping someone here on the site might have a good used engine I could swap out and maybe get another couple years out of the truck. I priced a new Crank kit and oil pump and cheapest I can find one for is $700.00 Dayyyyyyum I remember when I could put a Crank Kit in an old 350 for about $200 lol. Thanks in advance.

Chris I've built a few engines in my time and I am almost positive it's a Main Bearing. Oil pressure has dropped about 12 p.s.i. Since it began the nock till now. The nock is only audible when the engine is at idle. Has all the signs of being a bearing. I may be wrong but with my luck (if it weern't for bad I'd have none at all lol) it's more than likely a Main or Rod bearing.

If it was piston slap, it would have shown its self before 150K I would think.

Is it louder when the engine is cold? Piston slap sounds pretty loud on some trucks and really isn't audible at highway speeds. You really only hear it at idle and if you are outside the truck at idle.

The truck has always made a slight clatter (piston slap or valve clatter in my opinion) but the noise it is making now is VERY noticable and can hear it echoing in the aluminum oil pan pretty clearly.

Yes sir I agree. I believe the clatter the engine has always made was either piston slap or valve clatter. One of the two or a combination of the two

Yes it is a little louder when the engine is cold. But at any time while driving if I come to a stop light or stop sign. Once the engine goes to idle the sound is back and very audible even inside the cab. This morning while running 65 MPH coming to work the check engine light came on and flashed while I was in the throttle passing a car going 40MPH on the dayum 2 lane highway I travle. My first thought was Crankshaft sensor was picking up a vibration or walk of the crank.

Piston slap would not cause my Oil P.S.I. to drop 10-12 P.S.I. once the noise started though. Atleast I would not think???

Keep the suggestions coming though I'm open to trying to trouble shoot the dang thing. Still would like to find a replacement motor worst case scenario it being the bearings.

If I can't get this thing nailed down I may be "FORCED" to put the 468 C.I. BIG BLOCK Bowtie I got sitting on the engine stand in my truck lol. I've already been pondering ordering the material to build a custom made Aluminum Intake to use my fuel rails and injectors off of this motor. Only concern is not having enough fuel supply any thoughts?? Also anyone know a good place to findout what electronics I would need to bypass and how to to make this retro fit work???? This is ultimately my last resort. The wife aint too happy cause she knows that mean lowering the truck and possible mini tubs BUT hey it will sure pull the boat to the lake nicer lmao.

Was able to find this, http://www.urgpartsearch.com/link/searchresults.cfm?RequestTimeout=500

I've bought used parts from them here in the DFW area they have 2 locations and haven't had any problems so far and hadn't had to stomp around in the mud looking for what I wanted. They have it pulled cleaned up and sitting on the counter. Sorry about the bad luck but I don't have a whole lot of GM resources. Hope this helps.

Did it come up with the search link with a zip code to enter? You should just have to re-enter your vehicle info or go to their home page and start another search. From what I saw for the 4.8L prices ranged from $900 to $1200. There ain't nuthin cheep anymore. I can't imagine what a crate motor goes for anymore.

Here is the link to their home site map

They got one in Seguin which is about 30 minutes from my office. Thanks for all of your help brother I really appreciate it. Yeah I hear ya on the dadgum price of things these days. I'm really thinkin about just dropping a fresh built 350 in my 1981 Dually and parking this new truck. I've about had my fill of late model vehicles. Not to mention needing a whole network of computers just to diagnose the darn things.

Yea I hear ya on the computerized stuff. I used to do alot of hotrodding when I was much younger and remember it wasn't anything to throw a small block cheby or ford together running for 800 bucks. Even in my job computers have taken over.

Depending on the knock these engines are prone to sludging up. The oil screen is very small and will give problems of stopping up. You can pull the oil pan, pull the screen, clean it all out. Be shure to replace the pickup tube o-ring. The inlet thru the pickup is very small and it gets debris in it and stops it up. You can cut the the tin piece out of the way so it will pick up oil better.
