Ok i thought i would post a step by step recipe on how my wife makes my boilies. This is how we make them and i know there are many different ways but this recipe works great for me and i hope it will help some of you catch fish on them as well.


Start with 1/4 cup of flour, use soy flour if you can find it, i ran out so im using regular all purpose flour.



Next 1/4 cup of corn meal, i use white because i add colors but yellow will work as well



Then 1/4 cup of semolina flour, this is the most important ingredient and should not be substituted for anything else





Mix these DRY ingredients in their own bowl, then using a separate bowl mix 2 large eggs, flavor and food coloring if your using coloring.

Flavor of choice wacker baits Scopex 1/2 tbsp (7.5ml)



Yellow food coloring 1.5 cap full





Mix dry ingredients with wet ingredients



Form in to a thick paste like play-doh



divide paste in to seperate sections then roll in to a log

Cut the log in to desired mm sections (these are between 16mm to 18mm)



Using your hands roll the sections to balls



Boil for 50 seconds +/- for bigger or smaller boilies



After boiling leave them in a pan to dry, once dried they will be ready for use or storage



Once again im no professional boilie maker and im sure there are things others do differently but these have caught me plenty of fish and i hope this helps some one else catch some fish.

Ihere is always room for improvements even after a long time of boilie making...What is very important is that you have fun making them...it is so much more satisfying catching with your own home made bait

Great Guide!! It's been over a year since I have made boilies and could not remember all the steps. Thanks for the refresher.

Only thing I do different is the ingredients are a bit different, and I use a Sausage gun and rolling table.

Lol yea she makes my boilies, the kitchen is her domain she wont let me touch anything in there so she just makes them for me works out great. Shes got one step sister but shes 12, lol.

Sort of newly weds our 3 year anniversary is tomorrow.

Just kidding mate. My missus helps me when I'm rolling my boilies too.

it is a great feeling catching fish on your own bait

You don't actually need to roll them into balls...there are several great carpers who don't.
Of course you might have trouble with a boilie throwing stick, but for hook baits it doesn't hurt for them to be square, cylindrical, etc.

The only ingredients I can see that are not readily available on local grocery store shelves are Seminolina (a bit hard to find, in my experience) and the Scopex flavoring (must be mail-ordered).

I'd like to incorporate this recipe into the FAQ thread, but I want to suggest some stores that sell Seminola and some alternate flavors that are easy to find. Can anyone tell us (1) which stores carry Seminolina? and (2) what are some other carp-catching flavors that can be purchased at grocery stores?

Flavors from store by McCormick in spice section:

Almond extract-oil based
Raspberry extract
Root Beer Concentrate
Imitation Butter Flavor
Imitation Banana Extract
Imitation Vanilla Butter & Nut Flavor
Imitation Strawberry Extract
Imitation Rum Extract

Other Additives:

Chili Powder
Paprika
Dried Krill
Bird Seed

Semolina flour is hard to come by ive only been able to find it online and in one grocery store, the soy flour can be found at whole foods. If you dont want to order flavors online like Zach said you can buy the extracts from the grocery store or mix in one packet of kool-aid to the dry mix. Kool-aid works great and most of the time eliminates the need for coloring, the only down side is kool-aid doesn't come in scopex flavor.

Why is it not possibel to ask tres flores or a big feed store to make 2 basic mixes and sell them to the TFF for a good price!
It would make life so much easier dont you think!

it would still involve shipping, we have a great base mix we can get from BCT, lonestar baits base mix all you need to do is add eggs to it. I think the idea here is to be able to make baits from stuff you can find at the grocery store.

Sorry zach but you guys think its going to be easy to make a GOOD bait by just shop in the supermarket...its not THAT easy
Even down here you have to be on the look out on were to score the right ingredients..its a fact of life
But it can be done and real cheap to
Its just that it looks like its more difficult down your place and then it might be easier and cheaper to have a basic mix that you can buy in 10pounds bags...saves a lot of mixing and looking around shopping

The baits i make work GOOD enough for me, i catch plenty of fish on them, and once the semolina flour is found its pretty easy to just go pick it up and start making boilies. Like Zach said there are places to buy pre-mix boilie ingredient but the purpose of this is to be able to go out and buy the stuff you need locally spend 15 mins making them, then go out and fish them.

I never said that, I just said the point here is people want to be able to find the ingredients at there local stores with out having to order things in, if they wanted to order a pre-made base mix they could order from Dave at Big Carp Tackle and get the Lonestar Baits base mix.

Here is what I have been using in some form or another this is from Richard circa 2002

"This is a very sucessfull bait that I've used for a few years.
4 oz Soya bean meal "Ground to a powder"
3 oz Whey powder
2 oz mixed seeds
6 oz Semolina
1 oz Yeast Powder

I think this mix would cost about 1 dollar per pound, the whey powder and the yeast are fairly expensive.

I also include a vitamin source and some peanut or olive oil to the eggs. Then I may use various other ingriedients such as black pepper, Betaine, Obsession for carp, Sweetener, Dye, Red Cell or an Amino liquid food.

This isn't a really highly nutritional bait, but it is a bait that carp like and return to look for. Compared to what we eat its really healthy!

Well thats a perfect bait zach and if those ingredients are easy to get I dont see why not every body is using it yet!
You can use a flavor..if needed..you can add chili..its a bird seed mix

So WHY is NOBODY using this mix?

Shopping in the supermarket might be good enough around here. Americarp aren't as picky as Eurocarp, so our baits probably don't need to be as refined. It would be interesting if someone fished their home-made boilies alongside some commercial boilies and compared catch rates.

That would be cool and a fun experiment even more so if they are the same size and flavor.

well obviously Richard is using it and he created LoneStar Baits and that is the base mix I use for boilies so there are a few of us who do

Be aware that soya flour is called soy flour here in the States.

One could theoretically drive to five or six stores asking for soya flour but never finding it, not realizing that soya flour is the same thing as soy flour. Not that I ever did that, mind you....

Brett I know the out come of ready mades against self made boilies this was my remark earlier in this tread
Ready made commercial boilies SUCK because it has a lot of preservatives in them..it makes them bitter in taste

I've fished my boilies alongside commercial baits and the results are exactly as expected.

Sometimes my bait owns, sometimes it gets owned.

usually, it comes out pretty even though. I, however, use a few unique flavors...

This Autumn and Winter, I will be using the boilie that somehow got named "moon pie". Brilliant flavor though, I think it is just about time for a rolling party in my backyard (outside only, some of these flavors would quickly cause problems with the wife).

Also worth noting:

Semolina Flour is easy to find, you guys just need to stop buying groceries at wallmart.

This is why I dont have a wife anymore lol
But I do have problems with the neighbors thou...
Last wensday ive got my fish mix diliberd by truck..650pounds of it
Its in my living room right now to keep it dry until saterday ..thats when we are going to mix it in the GARDEN
And store it all in air tight containers in the garage
So the neighbors dont like me very much ...IMAO

I do and I know for a fact it was the early beginnings of a few peoples baits, though many are not rolling their own anymore. Richards baits were some of the most successful I have ever used, I did not have as much success on the base mix rolled myself, either I screwed up or its not the same as I used to buy from Richard. Red Demon baits were almost as good but I have a feeling they were based on Richards to some extent.

yep almond meal is great to put in a nutty mix
Its perfect on its own and you can use sweet flavors like scopex with it
The stuff is a bit fatty so you have to cut down in the soy flour ..you dont want it TO fat..rolls not so good when its fat

I get my Semo at my local health food store. It's in the freezer.

Why do you keep it in the freezer gg it will only make it wet
If you just store it dry you can keep it for a loooong time

Yea semolina is a must have or they wont come out right. Whole foods usually has some and central market is a good place to look.

I'm currently making a base mix for this winter, infarct will be rolling bait this weekend to test in Town Lake next weekend.

When making your baits, don't just use a liquid flavor. Carp like to have something tasty in there too.

Just thinking richard if the paprica is that price..the chili will be the same 4.99 right?
Do they have both in 10pound bags?
I ask this because i usualy add 5% paprica and 5% chili to a birdfood mix
That way you dont need any flavor at all to make the perfect robin red mix
