Not sure what kind of snake this is. Opened the garage door and there it was.

Compared to an actual copperhead that was in our swimming pool a few years back.

Im going with Copperhead. One that is really red and black where it should be brown and dark brown.

The pupils in the eyes are round, so I think this is a water snake.

The coloration is fascinating...

It's definately a pit viper and one to be avoided, IMHO.

If not a Copperhead, then what?

Unfortunately this snake's head met up with a 2" ball attached to a trailer hitch. Too bad, good looking snake.

The colors are pretty amazing.

The color pattern is unusually bright, but that is a juvenile broad-banded water snake (Nerodia fasciata confluens. Here's a picture with similar coloration (although yours is brighter) - broad-banded watersnake picture

This is definitely NOT a copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix)or a water moccasin (Agkistrodon piscivorus). The head scalation is not correct. Head shape is not correct. Pupil of eye is round. Scales are too weakly keeled. A copperhead or water moccasin this size would have a bright yellow or green tail. Tail shape is not a widely useful character for snake identification.

Kelly - thanks for the information. I have lived around (and with) Copperheads all my life (wife was bit by one in '94 and our dogs were bitten multiple times) and knew that it wasn't a Copperhead but I could not come up with what it was. The area we live in is called Copperhead Ridge and there is no doubt that it was properly named many years ago. I used to kill at least 6 per year around our home until I started clearing the brush near the house. They are not a big problem now.

He siad he hit it with a two inch ball... Maybe he was trying to get the head shape correct....

Gorgeous snake but I would have killed it also

I looked at more pictures of the broad banded water snake and that is definately what it is.....its non venomous but sure looks nasty with the color and shape of its head. Im sure the coloring is a survival tactic in the wild just like the frogs have....says it typically is 25-35 inches long

It's been stated already, but I agree. It's a Broad-banded watersnake (a particularly colorful one at that).

Eyes not indicative of any native specie that could prove to be venemous.Body not condusive to water moccasin specifically the tail. Some specie of water snake hybrid or possibly broad banded water snake with highly unusual colors.Always remember though that people loose pet snakes(some of these shipped to USA are highly venemous and do have round pupils) due to their abilities to escape, and some are lethal. So never pick a snake up unless you know for sure what it is.

Triangle shaped head, thick body and blunt tail are pit viper family traits.

hypomelanistic broad banded watersnake, common gene mutation that reduces dark pigment. what a beautiful creature.

I disagree. I beleive the head on the snake in the first picture is of the shape you would generally relate to a venomous snake. (in my opinion)

It's a copperheadedrattlemochosin they live near that guys house mostly. Have you ever seen a snake spin out. If one gets near me i drop a pile of slick S#$% that even a snake will spin out in can't catch me that way. And if it gets near again you can smell it before it gets to close.

Many non-venomous snakes flatten their heads when in a defensive pose. Triangular head or not, McCoy had it the first time.

Kelly McCoy stated it and I'll add to it. Round Pupils = Non Venomous. I've found a bunch of these before and sometimes they're dark and sometimes they're really bright and vivid.

It's pretty disheartening that so many are so quick to say "kill it". Even it was venomous, unless it poised a direct threat, there is no need to kill it. It makes no sense to me to kill an animal just because it has the "ability" to cause us harm. All you have to do to remain safe...is be smarter than the animal. If it can't be avoided or safely moved, that is one thing, but to just kill something because it exists on the same ground as you is simply sad. I was bitten by a copperhead when I was young, and even though I have seen a thousand of them since, I don't kill them or even harbor disdain towards them.
If you feel you must hurt something...go bang your head against a brick wall...maybe you will accidentally knock some sense into yourself and see that the needless killing of anything only serves to display what type of person you are.

Anyone that thinks that is a copperhead is an idiot! Yeah, I said it! For future reference, in North America ROUND PUPILS MEAN NON-VENOMOUS. Unless were looking at a coral snake, and even most of you guys should know what a coral snake looks like by now.
