Waiting for a better economy and also waiting for boat prices to come down to a reasonable price.

You asked.

boats are priced out of the reach of the common man, dealers lower the price a little and expect everyone to come running

I want a new boat because I have used mine a lot, but at current prices I will have to keep what I got. I have a 2004 skeeter and I will probably keep it till 2034. It is cheaper to take good care of it and fix what breaks. I can't justify 40k + for a new boat.

Boats and other items are priced as high as the market (us) will allow. I am a manager of a outdoor power store for low to big ticket items. The boat dealers I'm sure are in the same boat we all are. The mfg. sets your cost and we mark it up to make a profit (how I feed my family) but you have competion to deal with, overhead and when someone fin. a item on a promotion we usually loose 3%. So when it's all said and done if you gross 5% (before you pay your operating bills) on big ticket item your lucky. $30,000 x .05 = $1500 which isn't much on $30,000. I bought a used boat last year because I could not afford a new one but I don't hold that against any dealer. The original post was to drum up buisness for that dealer not to get bashed about prices he can't control.

Then the dealers need to step up and do something then. Someone is banking off of ridiculous prices. If it's the manufacturer, they would change their prices if the dealers didn't buy them. But none of this is realistic talk because there will always be enough people with enough money to give the manufacturers and dealers a reason to keep the sky high prices.

I'll agree that everyone needs to make money to feed their family, but with the economy the way it is, it is hard to justify buying a new boat or anything else. You never know how long your job will last. This week might be the last paycheck some get for a very long time. They have to fed their family also and you aren't going to do it on unemployment compensation. As somene posted earlier, there will always be some out there that will shell out the big bucks for something and it will keep the prices very high. Get ready for a very long depression, then we all will have to start over.

Newsflash - boat prices haven't gotten out of hand just within the past year! They've been way too high for 20+ years if you ask me.

+1

The responses in this post say it all. Manufacturers & dealers do not have much pricing power with average consumers who are desperately trying to reduce debt, not take on new debt. High unemployment, a significant percentage of people across the country under water with their mortgage or already defaulted, trying to pay for health care if they've lost their jobs, working part time jobs to try to make ends meet are really limiting consumer spending. You can't blame the boat/motor manufacturers and dealers for trying to drum up business with rebates, but like so many businesses they're probably in for a rough go for awhile due to low consumer confidence.
