I went to Port Aransas this weekend with my wife and got a chance to wet my saltwater noodle. The first day was the best, not alot of pepole on the beach for the holiday yet. My first saltwater fish on the fly is a trout, the irony. Caught this one a little later when I swiched to a intermediate sinking line and got a little deeper. The second day I caught ALOT of 10"-12" drum. And then this Any ideas on what kind of fish this is? All an all the crowds got bad at noon and and the fish went away too. Going to do it again for sure its a blast.

Wader-Noob and I stopped in Aransas Pass to fish some lights from a pier one night and saw a lady catch a Jack that was probably 3" or 4" long. Pretty cool especially that far back in the Bay! Those little jacks are all over the place right now. I fished the jetty the other day and caught a few of them on a truese and white clouser ripped in with a hand over hand retrieve, also caught what looked like a bar jack and they wouldn't hit it unless it was being ripped in.

Nice report. From the looks of the water line on your clothes you got out there pretty good. 2nd or 3rd bar?
From the looks of the surf, the 3rd bar would have been possible.

The third bar from that area is a little deep for comfortable flyfishing.

Brian I was about a mile south of the peir on the beach in the surf, using Fat Heads and decivers with barbell eyes and a rattle belly tied in chartruce over white with lots of flash.

Meadowlark I was on the second bar, the third bar was another 50 yards out and would have took a little swim to get too. Foldcat yes I made the stripping basket out of a plastic storage box and the wading belt from my Simms so incase I need to use it with waders it would work with them also.

Not a bad idea - any port in a storm. Might have tried a plastic basket so the water would drain out.

I use a washtub with a gazillion holes drilled in it so the surf washes in and out of it... but after you get over your waist there is really no need to use a basket. I recently had a friend suggest using a cut down milk crate or something similar, which is brilliant; heavy enough to remain stable, and porous enough to let water escape.

Mmmm yes a grocery basket would do I think. Assuming you would walk out of your friendly local grocer with one in tow to experiment with

Yes, but once it's on the bottom, it will act as structure, which will attract baitfish, which will, in turn, attract your target species. Get with the program, Robin.

The squeaky wheels and erratic directions changes inherent in most grocery carts would lend themselves to a nice shark streamer...

I think I'll swing by the local foofy coffee shop where "those" people go to get coffee, but this guy goes to get gelato. If'n you haven't had some you might wanna try it, it's like icecream on steriods.
