LOL, the most exciting carp I have caught in the last couple of years was caught on a tiny treble hook using bread. The rod was an old 5 ft piece of junk and the reel was a zebco 33 with a drag that didn't work. I had to run back and forth away from and toward the water vs using a drag in order to keep it from breaking off. That rod was supposed to catch a bluegill but somehow a carp found it.

we don't like the use of trebles because they can become a death rig if it catches all three sides and the line breaks and the fish has to die a slow death cuz it can't eat. plus you will catch more fish using single hooks.

This might sound to the uninitiated like pro-carp propaganda, but it is TRUE!

I learned this the hard way when starting out. I was losing a lot of fish to hook pulls (like about 25%) using trebles with dough bait and couldn't figure out why.

I decided to give single hooks a try after reading about their benefits online and that number of hook pulls went down drastically and I never went back.

I think that trebles, in addition to being dangerous to small-mouthed fish, are just too "busy" in that they don't give good enough range of motion when initially hooking the fish, especially carp where the initial hook penetration is very important due to their soft fleshy mouths.

No need to vilify those who use treble hook, any more than it is to vilify those with liberal political ideas.... wink

Good point. It's almost like one hook on a treble hook can't penetrate deeply because the opposite hooks are also trying to penetrate, so instead of a good hookset you often wind up with two or three of the hooks on a treble hook being hooked just a little bit. (How many times did I use "hook" in that sentence? hmmm)

I think I'll take Curt's advice and get a black phantom and put a baitcaster on it.
