just got back from 19 days off!!!!!
The trip started as bad as they can start. Packed ready to go and my truck battery is dead!!!! Get that fixed and make it to Ft. Worth and get a 3" piece of metal in my tire. Texas did not want me to leave I guess.
Anyways make it Kansas and stopped for the little ones on the side of road near some pond bust out the flyrod a bit and catch 4 quick bass!!
Spend 3 days in Ogallalla, Nebraska and mainly fish the little lake big cold front pushes through and makes fishing very tough. Totaled 4 small yellow perch, 4-6 small channel cats, 2 smallmouth bass.
Now the real trip we spent 8 days around steamboat springs awsome place if you get the chance to go. Plently of fishing, sightseeing, food, relaxing. Now the fishing reports
Pearl lake state park spent 4 nights in the Yurt and had most of the lake to myself. Great scenery with cystal clear water, great mountains. This lake is pretty much a catch and release with 2 fish 18" limit. Mostly Cutthroat with a small population of grayling. Tons of baitfish so catching fish was tough did manage two nice 12-14" cuts of white spinner and white superduper when they would bust up the bait fish.
steamboat lake statepark (gold medal water)
Fished it twice to get a gague on the lake lots of fish and moss. Found a nice spot on rainbow ridge between the two weedlines and caught nothing smaller than 15" it was crazy mostly worms and powerbait. My 3 1/2 year old son got the biggest fish 20 or so inches rainbow trout.
Yampa river in steamboat springs great river with plenty of great structures along it. I only fished maybe a half mile from the libary to candy store. worst day was 4 fish best was well over 20. Caught 2 browns, 3 pike, 20-30 rainbows biggest over 15" used both fly rod and spinning rod.
State forest state park (ranger lakes) a catch and take lake with moose!!!!! Crystal clear water and well stocked limited on rainbows a nice place to relax and enjoy the mountains and fish.
Then we went to pagosa springs for 5 days the fishing was much slower the rivers were very low.
San Jaun in pagosa managed only small bows on flyrod did see someone catch a 20+ on salmon egg otherwise very slow.
Animas in Durago low and slow saw one nice brown but looked to have been caught in the last couple of days (white mouth)a lot of small trout.
Alberta lake a quality rio grande cutthroat lake water was very stained and walked the whole lake without a single bite should have tried fly rod but did not
William creek resivor (SP) great mountain view and fair fishing. Tons of fish small one very aggessive on evening hatches and good keeper sized trout. Managed 2 keeper rainbows and 1 kokanee salmon on a pixe!!!!!! He was VERY tasty.
So overall fishing on some days was poor others excellent caught what I targeted which was pike on flyrod, cutthroat, and kokanee.
I will try to post pictures after dinner.
