Over the past few weeks, I have been in contact with The U S Forest Service New Waverly office.
Last Friday, FireFly49 and I met with the Head Ranger, Warren Oja, in regard to the development of a kayak/canoe launch on the San Jacinto River north of Stublefield. (approx 4.5 miles up river) There is a section of US Forest property that borders the river off of Pussom Walk Loop Rd also known as Cotton Rd.

The courts have already rendered a ruling over public or private access to the section of road that is already there. This dates as far back as 1933. recently Federal court ruled that this road is a rublic road although it is not on the registery of the Forest Service as a public access road.


During our meeting the request was made to improve the road , approx 3/4 of a mile, and develope a kayak and canoe launch site along the San Jacinto River.

Ranger Warren was very receptive to the project request, however there is no guarentee. There are sevral things that would need to take place before and if such a project could be accomplished.

Ranger Warren did request that any interested parties, send him an email. This would give him an idea of interest and intended use for this request.

I am requesting that anyone that would be interested in having a launch site to send Ranger Warren an email. I have drafted an form letter , with his email addres . All you would have to do is cut and past and add your information. I am further asking that a copy also be sent to the email addres listed at the bottom of the letter. This will give me an idea on how many people would be interested in this. Even if you may only use this proposed launch site on a very limited basis, your email would be greatly apprciated.

As an avid kayaker and canoeist, I am requesting the development of a kayak and canoe launch site along the San Jacinto River within the National Forest boundary located off Cotton Rd also known as Possum Walk Loop, Huntsville, Texas.

This request would require the use of approximately 4800 feet or less than ¾ of a mile, of development and or improvement to existing road for vehicle access.

The development of a kayak and canoe launch site would be low impact to the environment as it would not require any concrete structure and minimal road access improvement.

Having such an access to the San Jacinto River would afford the opportunity for many kayak and canoe enthusiasts to further enjoy this natural resource.
