My B-day is Friday and I'm going to East Texas till Labor Day to celebrate with my family! Wooohooo, don't know if ill be fishing but there are a few ponds in the area i want to hit with the fly!!!

i rented a cabin out at lake mexia, ill be there friday thru monday. hope i get a biggun, there is no record and iv never fished it, only scouted it a few times.

Both , small carp (5lb and below) are taken for bait anything bigger goes back.

I've never used it before , but I've heard a lot of good things about cut carp.

you'll catch so many catfish accidentally while carp fishing you won't need cut carp , just maize. I can't tell you how many 5-8# kitties I caught last year but it would have filled a freezer. The only time I'd consider using small carp for bait is for gator gar fishing. To each his own though and thanks for only using the smaller ones....

Wow , I'm gonna be buying some new catfish rods before I get a carp/channel set up , so I might just bring the catfish gear along to fork when I get out there later this fall.

So the whole discussion about wich rod to buy was a waste of time WTG JB

How ? I said I'd bring along my catfish rods with me while I was carping not that I would use them for carp.

How does bringing my catfish only rods with me so I can get in on the catfish action while I'm carp fishing with my lighter rods make the rod discussion pointless ?

Actually by catfish rods I mean 12ft heavy action surf rods so yes the rods I'd use for carp/channel cats would be lighter. The big rod is for blues and flatheads not channels and carp.

I didn't bring any gear, or have time. I did go rock climbing at Hueco Tanks yesterday and have eaten some kick a$$ Mexican food. Am going to Carlsbad caverns tomorrow then back home Monday. I wish I had time to fish here but time is very limited.

Carlsbad is awesome; I've been there a couple of times and would go back in a heartbeat. Guadalupe Peaks is great as well; there are creeks there with the only native trout in Texas.
