Loc: Where the Weather takes me
I was out fishing for Redfish (Tons of them running the bank) today. I was fishing on bottom with a live Piggy Perch.

I missed one nice bite, the rod bent over but when I set the hook it pulled. So I re baited and cast back out. I started looking up at the Cirrus Clouds and totally for got about my rod. lol I looked back down just in time to see my line go slack, then jerk back up. It did this a few more times while I was going for the rod. I grabbed it and set the hook and at first I thought I was hung up be then the fish took off on a powerful run striping drag from my Abu Ambassador 6000. Then the fish broke the surface and I could tell it was a Gar. Being that I was going for Redfish I had none of my Gar gear down there. A quick call for back up fixed that.

Anyway, it turned out to be a nice Gator Gar coming in about 3ft long or so.

After a long time of getting no bites, and loosing one at the pier it happened.... the float on my float rod started to twitch. then it went under, and came back up, twitched a few more times, then started running. I felt the Gar had the bait long enough and was fixing to swallow the bait so I reeled the line tight and set the hook hard a few times. It felt as if I had a big log on the end of the line. The fish did not move much, nor could I move it any. Not even my PB 4fter did that. No doubt in my mind it was a huge Gator Gar. It then went on a hard run pulling line from my reel like crazy. After fighting it back in, I got it right under my rod tip, still yet to have laid eyes on the massive fish. Then what I dread the most happened.... The hook pulled! No doubt in my mind I had my largest Gar yet on the line, and lost it with out even getting to see it.

Oh well, Guess it was not meant to be my Gar. I'll just have to get out there and get her hooked up again.

till next time,
Dustin

Yeah... One is better than blanking. I'd take a small Gator Gar over a red any day.

Thats the thing.... I don't know. I never saw it. All I know is I had a Med-heavy 7ft spinning rod, 15lb BBG mainline, 170lb leader, and a 5/0 J-hook and I could not lift the fish in to view when it was under the rod tip. It must have been HUGE! My PB 4ft'er did no such thing.

It's hard to guess a size when you did not see the fish, but I'd say it would have been around 100lbs being that I could not pull it up.
