I'm researching things I need to buy to get into jig tying... one thing I'm curious about is the stuff for the jig itself. Here is an example of a commercially available jig (Slab Daddy). What are the materials the arrows are pointing to?

The first arrow is pointing to the Chenille and the second arrow is pointing to the feather (which is marabou in this case).

OK, thanks Anthony. I like the jigs with the thick bodies, but before I go buying stuff I'd like to know what to get to make the kind of jigs I want to make. By the way, you make some real nice looking jigs.

another question... are the Terra vises OK for a beginner? any other entry level vise recommendations?

Ditto on what Rad said, you could buy a renzetti vise, but why? I have a Cabelas brand vise, very nice vise for the price. If all you are going to be tying is jigs then any vise will do ya. If your are considering tying smaller flies then a vise will multiple jaws may suit you. Cabelas brand vises are cheap and i have tied flies down to size 22 on mine.

I bought one of those kits from Bass Pro and the vise on that thing was worthless. The jigs kept slipping and the vise rotated when I didn't want it to. It finally broke in half on me. I bought a new vise for $24.99 and it has been a TON better. Cheap is good. Cheap and carppy isn't.

Hey craigo this is a good hobby and their are a lot of members who live close to you that tie jigs and only use jigs they have a lot of good informatation on this subject and people have different styles of tieing and varations none is textbook they all work at some point and time. I am sure I will see you on the water sometime soon.

all right yall... I got my jig stuff in and have a report from a newbie (no pics yet... what I've done so far is pretty embarrassing). So far, I'll just say this about learning to tie jigs. 2 things I've learned... it's important to actually consider what you're buying in terms of materials (ie. my thread does not match my chenille, and the jigs look terrible). And also, whip finishing is tough to learn... I've learned to do it, but have to do it with my hands and cant figure out that whip finish tool for the life of me. Thanks to all who have chimed in for advice on different things... keep it coming

Thanks to all who have chimed in for advice on different things... keep it coming I stopped using that divice to do the whip finishing since I couldn't get the thread to hold so I started putting the line on my fingers doing the same thing and I can get the finish perfectly each time. Good luck with the learning curve.
