Buying a truck

I hope to be buying a new (to me) truck in a couple months. I'm not necessarily brand loyal, but I will only buy American. Nissan, Toyota and Honda are NOT options. I have been driving Fords for a long time, and had a GMC before that. I was against a Dodge, but rode in one recently and liked it. So please give me pros and cons with Ford, Chevy/GMC, and Dodge. Repairs? Gas mileage? Ride? Towing ability? Any and all opinions wanted please!

Tom, you know me & I'm a Dodge & Nissan type of guy. The thing about "buying American" is many have outsourced parts. The Titan is built right here in the USA. Steph wanted a new veh & wanted to buy American also. Believe it or not the Dodge Charger that she bought has less USA parts than the Infiniti she also looked at.

Understood Dave. But I want a company that is American owned. Where the profits stay in the USA, not go to Tokyo. It's a different dynamic these days, but I'm an old fashioned type of guy. I wouldn't own one if they gave it to me.

Guess you're going to buy a Ford. GM and Chrysler/Dodge are mostly owned by the government (us) but the created debt has been bought/financed by China
Chinese, Japanese, or Ford??????

If you want to pull your boat at 75mph bucking a 30mph wind up a steep grade without ever downshifting from overdrive, try a diesel with a tune.
Ford gets my vote. Too much uncertainty with the GM and Dodge financial situation.

I love my 250 Super Duty Ford w/6.4 Diesel. Rides great and pulls good. The mileage is 13 or so pulling a 20' Bass Cat Puma.

I wouldn't own one if they gave it to me. Dodge is now majority owned by Fiat. So, that would leave Ford & GM. Between the 2 I would pick a Ford.

V-8 for towing. Extended cab but not crew cab. A bed liner would be good. It will be my every day driver and also tow my boat, so a towing package would be nice. Who's getting better mileage these days? I hear Chevy has that part over Ford?

Maybe but I'd take the 5.4L over the 5.3L for towing, if that's what you're looking at. The Ford produces better torque at a lower rpm than the Chevy.
Doubt there is 1 mpg difference between the two trucks.

I have a 5.3 and does really well in mpg and also for towing. I'm sure there are bigger engines that pull better but also at a MPG expense. With Chevy though they have bigger engines like the 6.0 or 6.2, not so much with Ford, but bigger engine more power but at the expense of MPG. For what I use it for the 5.3 is a good all around.
I have the ext cab chevy with the 5.3 and fits the bill perfectly. Good ride, good power and awsome MPG. However Ford has a nice truck as well, I would give Dodge a few years to see how quality turns out. So far they are doing well on their new model as far as stepping it up in quality but we'll see in the long run how it does.

Monte Coon is the man! Call him and you will be smiling even after the deal is done! I agree if you are looking for Chevy, even thought you live in Garland. I would call him and I can promise it will be worth the drive over.. I bought a Chevy 1500 Crew 5.3L Z71 and when I get ready to buy my wife a new Tahoe, Monte will get my business.. By the way my truck is getting 20.7 on the hwy and about 14 pulling the boat. I put dual exhaust and a new air intake and helped it breathe and it got better mileage

Thanks guys. I've already been in contact with Monte and will be calling him when the time comes. I'm just not sure I'll have the cash to buy new. That's why the make is up in the air. Payments have to fit the budget. I'll give him first shot, that's for sure.

If you buy Ford do some serious research on the motors. There have been some serious problems with the 5.4s. You might get lucky and get a good one but why chance it. I know that after 30 years of Ford ownership I will never buy another one until they prove that the problems are fixed. I defected and bought a Toyota in April. Wife still drives the F150 because I probably could not get much out of it with the resales dropping the way they are. I know the Chevy motors even though they are the old design still get better MPG an have more HP. If you want to do some research on the 5.4 go to Ford F150 froum.

F-150 with the small V-8 is plenty when pulling med size boat on Sat or Sun to the lake. I have 17 1/2 Foot Sprint I'm pulling with '08 super crew. Since about 90% of my driving is non-towing I get the better fuel economy 90% of the time.

If you haven't bought anything yet here is something to think about. We the taxpayers bailed out GM with American money. Not long ago GM was given permission from a bankruptcy judge in NY that they could stop the contract they had with Stillwater Mining in MT to buy platinum, palladium and rhodium which are used in catalytic convertors. Now instead of buying in America they are looking to buy overseas. http://www.billingsgazette.com/news/stat...1cc4c03286.html
