Well I ain't exactly sure about that statement Ghostie. Sure there is a great amount of GG in the south but I would venture to say that up here we have a dang good population ourselves. You can find them on the Trinity River, Red River, most of the lakes here in the area, Rayburn, RC, Livingston, Toledo, etc. Now maybe it's just cause I live in the east Tex area and not the south but I hear of more GG being caught here than anywhere else, but like I said it might be just do to the fact of where I live.
Now as far as the bait situation goes I would recomend cut carp or buffalo. These are the most common used baits for big gar and most will tell ya that it's their favorite food. Just remember to cut the bait relative to the size fish you want to catch, smaller chunks for needles, and big chunks up to 1 lb or so for the big GG.
