Are gar located in pretty much every river/creek that has enough forage to support them? I'm new to garfishing but would like to catch some. And can all 3 species be caught with cutbait such as perch or bluegill? Thanks

Well... Spotted, and Longnose Gar can be found in most any water body in Texas. Alligator Gar populations are more abundent in the More southern parts of the state.

All Species can be Caught with Cut baits, but the size needs to vary from species to species.

Well I ain't exactly sure about that statement Ghostie. Sure there is a great amount of GG in the south but I would venture to say that up here we have a dang good population ourselves. You can find them on the Trinity River, Red River, most of the lakes here in the area, Rayburn, RC, Livingston, Toledo, etc. Now maybe it's just cause I live in the east Tex area and not the south but I hear of more GG being caught here than anywhere else, but like I said it might be just do to the fact of where I live.

Now as far as the bait situation goes I would recomend cut carp or buffalo. These are the most common used baits for big gar and most will tell ya that it's their favorite food. Just remember to cut the bait relative to the size fish you want to catch, smaller chunks for needles, and big chunks up to 1 lb or so for the big GG.

Thank you for the correction on my statement, Sir. After looking over my post again, I see I was not clear on exactly what I meant. I'll go change it.

It's best to have lines on top and on bottom and once you find where they are biting adjust all lines to that area. I have caught gar under a bobber and while fishing on the bottom.
