get ya some live bluegill and about $1000 for gas money and drive up to the red river that runs through canada and you can catch all kinds of big channelcat up there. 2 to 3 inche bluegill has always seemed to be the bait for big channelcat as that's probably their main forage fish if there's not many shad in the area.

Tiny pulls his boat with a VolksWagen bus, so he needs $100 to get to Canada and back, and $900 for boat gas... smile

You gotta make sure and have plenty of gas for the boat.

My rig would take just about that if not more there and back. I get 8-10 mpg. F450 twin turbo 6.0 liter, automatic. About the best i have ever got was on trip to Missi. got up to 11 1/2mpg. with cruise set at 65. But man can pull a 450 JD dozer like it was a boat behind me. And when boat is I sometimes forget it its back there.

huge channels can be hard to find
my best channels come off of jug lines at night with cut shad

use cut shad and fish everywhere that has any kind of structure especially at dawn/dusk and night

would you plan a trip to canada or near canada with less than $1k in your pocket? I don't think so ... when you got up there you wouldn't want to have to pick up and come right back ... maybe a week fishing the famous channelcat fishery known as the red river otn. Then after flood and lodging you'd have enough gas money to get back home ... maybe. 30 lb channelcat are caught up there all the time ... 20 lb'rs are common

Knight, you didn't mention if you had a boat.
Also, you didn't mention if you want to catch them on rod&reel or if you are just going for meat, anyway you can catch them.
Your location says D'Hanis, so if I were there I would either go to Kerrville to fish the lakes near there or to Lake Medina. Either place can be fished either by boat or off the bank.
Find out what the forage species is, sunfish are everywhere, but shad is better if they have them. I would use cut shad if I had the choice, on a large (6/0 or bigger) circle hook. As some other have said, find some good structure (flats off of the river/creek channel) and wait them out!

Some also like to chum them in, using soured milo or feed corn.

Not only on the Red Riveer-Northeast of Winnepeg 150 miles on the BloodVein River-only maybe 5 mile stretch- but 12 to 15 lbs on a fly-in trip...looks like Walleye water but great catfishing
