I have caught a few on Conroe. I have seen some large one's caught.
All they are is a black drum, which is a good eating fish.
They seem to be held in less than favorable regard.
Black drum grill up very nicely.
Does anyone go after gasper-goo ?

Caught them unintentionaly, they do taste good.

I have some spots baited out at Hubbard for them.

I can catch some goo's fishing live bait and cut bait for stripers. Never cleaned one though. I have heard they taste good.

I like eating fish and wild game but.....

Goo's, Coons ,Possums,Carps, gars, Bob Cats, Squerls,........I am sure there good if you no how to cook them but....I ain't never been that hungry!

I've eaten plenty of black drum but a goo ain't the same animal. Probably cooks up ok though.

I always called these white drum.

From TPWD: Although freshwater drum is considered a rough fish by many anglers, it is prized as a food fish in some areas. Drum are also sought after as bait for other species. In Texas the rod and reel record exceeds 30 pounds, and the trotline record is 55 pounds.

What I would like to know is: where is "some areas"?

Caught these many times on Bridgeport. If they're a couple pounds or more then I keep em.
Very good tasting fish.

Small ones are good to eat. I have cooked them with crappie and no one said a word

We always kept them when I was a kid. They do get very
skinny after they spawn, I imagine they would not be
very good at that time.

Freshwater drum love muscles too.

They filet up like a 5 lb crappie. They taste better than white bass, and have the same firm texture as their saltwater cousins.

They are the only freshwater species of the drum family, but are very similar in many ways to black drum, or redfish.


I have a hard time targeting them other than a couple months of the year when they come in very shallow. They are a blast on a fly rod once they pass 8 lbs or so too.

My largest is just over 20 lbs, and I catch a couple around 15 or so every year.

I do eat them, but I stick to the ones under 8 lbs or so.

Next time you catch a 1 or 2 pounder, fillet it up with the white bass or crappie you were targeting, and you'll be surprised. Of course, last time I told someone this, they put crappie on ice, and threw the freshwater drum on the deck all day, then complained about the taste ....
