My dad just sold his to my brother and I have driven it alot.It is a 2008 model. I love the way it looks but do not like the drivetrain. Not impressed either. The steering is way to loose for me. I like a little resistance but thats the way all chevys ride. Also we bought it brand new and the a/c kind of has a foul smell to it when you turn the a/c on. They look good though.

Anything '07 or above had the 5yr/100k mile powertrain warranty. I think some of the Classics had the old powertrain warranty but certainly the newer design had the better warranty. An '08 has the longer warranty.

I'm sure one of the cars guys will correct me if I'm wrong.

I just bought an 09 TX edition 5.3L. I love it. This is my 3rd Silverado 5.3L. I tow all the time, get around 15mpg and my previous 2 trucks had around 100k and never required service in the shop.

Love my '08, though the driveline "clunk" always worries me. Put 24K on it last year and (knock on wood) everything has been fine.

Drivetrain - Driveline Clunk Information

INFORMATION

Bulletin No.: 99-04-20-002E

Date: June 06, 2008

Subject:
Information on Driveline Clunk Noise When Shifting Between PARK and DRIVE, PARK and REVERSE or DRIVE and REVERSE

Models:
2009 and Prior GM Passenger Cars and Light Duty Trucks (including Saturn)
2009 and Prior HUMMER H2, H3
2009 and Prior Saab 9-7X

Supercede:

This bulletin is being revised to add model years. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 99-04-20-002D (Section 04 - Driveline/Axle).

Important: The condition described in this bulletin should not be confused with the following previous bulletins:

^ Info - Discontinue Flushing and Replacing Transfer Case Fluid Due to Bump/Clunk Concern (Corporate Bulletin Number 99-04-21-004A or newer).

^ Clunk, Bump or Squawk when Vehicle Comes to Complete Stop or Accelerating from Complete Stop (Replace Rear Drive Shaft Nickel-Plated Slip Yoke) (Corporate Bulletin Number 01-04-17-004B or newer).

Some owners of vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions may comment that the vehicle exhibits a clunk noise when shifting between Park and Drive, Park and Reverse, or Drive and Reverse. Similarly, owners of vehicles equipped with automatic or manual transmissions may comment that the vehicle exhibits a clunk noise while driving when the accelerator is quickly depressed and then released.

Whenever there are two or more gears interacting with one another, there must be a certain amount of clearance between those gears in order for the gears to operate properly. This clearance or freeplay (also known as lash) can translate into a clunk noise whenever the gear is loaded and unloaded quickly, or whenever the direction of rotation is reversed. The more gears you have in a system, the more freeplay the total system will have.

The clunk noise that owners sometimes hear may be the result of a buildup of freeplay (lash) between the components in the driveline.

For example, the potential for a driveline clunk would be greater in a 4-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle than a 2-wheel drive vehicle. This is because in addition to the freeplay from the rear axle gears, the universal joints, and the transmission (common to both vehicles), the 4-wheel drive transfer case gears (and their associated clearances) add additional freeplay to the driveline.

In service, dealers are discouraged from attempting to repair driveline clunk conditions for the following reasons:

^ Comments of driveline clunk are almost never the result of one individual component with excessive lash, but rather the result of the added affect of freeplay (or lash) present in all of the driveline components.

^ Because all of the components in the driveline have a certain amount of lash by design, changing driveline components may not result in a satisfactory lash reduction.

^ While some owners may find the clunk noise objectionable, this will not adversely affect durability or performance.

^ For additional diagnostic information, refer to the appropriate Service Information.

Right. In other words, it's "normal" and their not going to fix it anymore. Thats bothers me. If it were "normal", wouldn't other trucks emit a similar noise? I've driven Toyota, Nissan, and Ford trucks in the past and I've never heard anything like that in them. Good thing the powertrain warranty is 5/100.

I love my truck, but I really wanted a new Tundra. However, I only paid $24K for the new Chevy as opposed to the $32K Toyota wanted...

Buff,I would try another dealer see if they can do anything for you. If a dealer has any records that you bought it in before the 36,000 and was complaining about the problem and did'nt do anything.a good dealer should be able to help you.

im done with dealers, if three different dealers cant fix a simple diff cover leak and nethier can i because iv tried and 2 other people has tried than the dealer where i bought the truck has screw it up so bad that im gonna have to get a used rear end just to stop a leak, screw it im gonna drive it till it blows.

iv tried silicone, red, black, gold, clear, still leaks out the cover, i bought the 7 dollor paper gasket still leakes, so you tell me whats up. im tired of spending my money and gas taking it to dealers and getting the same response, " we dont want the liaibilty issue take it back to where you bought it".

i even called the gm hotline and customer support and complained and yelled at them and they told my in a beat around the bush kinda way to f off. so screw it when it blows ill but a totaled out gmc truck loaded with all the stuff and strip it.

i heard something else too but dont know if its true or not, i heard that gm and dodge isnt gonna warrinty any car/truck prior to march 15th of this year due to the bail out agreement with the goverment, if thats the case than it COULD explain why iv had so much issues getting my truck fixed right. but who knows, just my .02

i work for a dealer and we warranty almost everything that comes through the door, as far as the rear end leak i have had some that are leaking through an open pore in the metal that you probrably cant see, should be warranty, in fact if its a new body style 08 truck it has a 100,000 mile warranty no matter what!!!

Man this sucks. I made the mistake of going from an 02 Z71 w/5.3 to an 04 Chevy Duramax to an 06 Dodge with Hemi. I just did not like the way the 5.3 pulled 22ft boats. Pulled like [censored]. The Hemi does great for pulling but the truck around it sucks balls, and I was gonna get back into a Chevy and live with the fact that they don't pull larger boats well, but look nice and ride great.
Almost pulled the trigger on an 08 Z71 last week.
Guess I may end up ponying up and going with a Toyota, or maybe a Ford. Dang!

I have the '07 new style and its almost 3 yo with 63,000. Love it so far. I only pull a 19'6" ChampN though but I don't really feel it there.

No problems though. I do have the clunk occassionally though while at stop and release the brake.

I pulled a 20'5 Bass Cat no problem at all I guess we will see if it holds up to my 2000 Chevy had 172,000 no problems at all could have drove it another few years I think but with the big deals going on right now Goverment Motors or not they are to good to pass up. Dodge a joke plus parts are hard to come by and the resale sucks and had a couple of Fords and I would ride a Bike before I would by another one. We have about 30 Fords at work and 30 Chevy and 10 Dodge Chevy seems to be alittle better on the service end and holds up better we will see. Toyota is a nice truck built good but I will keep my money in the USA plus at 35,000 to 45,000 for a Toyota is alittle to much with no deals being done by them they love there truck it is nice but if we keep giveing our mney back to other companys we will never get out of this jam the USA is in we need to keep the money here.
