Several times recently when changing from 4 wd to 2 wd it takes a while for the unit to make the change. Then after it makes the change and I drive a couple of miles down the road it suddenly just free wheels. I have to pull over and jockey the 4 x 4 switches back and forth a time or two before it goes into gear again.
Before I take it to the shop, I was hoping someone might be able to tell me that they had a similar experience and might know the cure.
Thanks for any comments......except "GET a FORD", I am too old to change my wicked Chevy ways now, unless I have to buy a new truck, then I don't know if Government Motors will still appeal to me or not!
Thanks,
Jack

BTW it is a 2500 4 x 4 extended cab with the 6.0 L gas engine and the HD transmission. 10 years old but less than 100,000 miles on her.

check the front axle actuator, sounds like it is sticking.are not engaging completely.it has two wires going to it on the front axle next to the carrier.they get old and weak, they are electronically controlled.

+1 on the encoder motor (shift control actuator).
However, there is a major problem with the front axle actuator- almost a 90% failure rate- but they either work or dont work.

My 02 did the same thing multiple times. The dealer fixed it everytime, and I'm not sure what they fixed, but I do know everytime I got my truck back they replaced the panel (4x4 buttons) on the left side of the dash.

Be sure and look for a leak on the tailhousing in front of the rear drive shaft. They have a problem with the pump inside beating a small pin hole through the tail housing and you loose all of your fluid and your t-case is junk.

4wd actuator, or bad switch on the dash. Just like Ronnie says. seen both very frequently over the years. this has been an inherent problem w/ GM trucks since they started using this setup back in '92.
you'd think they'd have figured it out after 17 years of warranty claims, but...........
