Open highway, running 65-70 MPH 18-20 MPG
City driving it drops down to 16 MPG

What's the real gas mileage on a new one with the 5.7 engine? I'm glad you asked the question, been wanting to know this also. 20 MPG's is better than my Duramax with programmer.

18.5 average, that is city and highway. if you drive it sideways, of course it will be lower. the 6 speed tranny and the 4:30 gears really help the mpg

4:30 is a pretty high ratio. Chevy used to use low 3s to help with MPG. Of course the real ratio is dependent on tire size and they are putting bigger ones on these days.

Twenty miles to the gallon? BULL BUTTER!!! Mine gets eleven to thirteen in town and about sixteen to seventeen on the highway driving like grandma. If I am in a hurry then no more than fifteen on the highway and I don't want to know what it is in town. 5.7 4x4 6speed auto. All hand calculated.

Heck, even going to www.fueleconomy.gov (the official page for the cash for clunkers program) it shows a 2 mpg difference in the combined rating for a 2010 4x4 5.7 vs. a 2010 4x2 5.7. The numbers (and you're matching JHow's number) seem no different. What's BS about that? You and he are figuring 17 and the 4x2 owners are coming up with 19 or as high as 20 on occasion. Seems legit to me. Sure I can drive 80-85 and get 15 mpg on the highway...I can also drive 60-65 and get 19-20.

K.D. you don't understand what I am saying here, when I say driving like grandma I mean 55-60 on the highway and below 2000 rpm in town. In a hurry for me means 70-72 on the highway and just keeping up with the busy folks in town.

I would have to agree with onthewater. My Tacoma will just manage 21 @ 70 mph on the highway. I have had many 4x4s and never had one get over 16.

I get 15.5-18.5 mpg. Last weekend I got 18.2 mpg on a 200 mile trip. I get 13.5 mpg towing my travel trailer @60 mph.

You might want to do some research on gasoline before you go out of your way or pay more for Shell. All gasolines are basically the same. There is also no way to know where that gas came from. I have seen the Love's trucks at the terminal in Greenville. I cannot remember the brand but they buy from all over. Bottom line is there are a lot of marketing gimmicks played by gas companies. You may get Shell refined gas one day and the next day it will be something else.

I average 15-16 mostly city but some highway.(I never got less then 12 even pulling my boat) Last weekend I went to my moms place in East Texas and set the cruise on 68mph. Got 20 mpg. So no its not BULL BUTTER. It can be done. Its just not the norm.

So I have a question for the Tundra owners. I have heard of everyone plugging programmers into their trucks. What does this do for your truck? I am thinking of getting one for both of my Tundras, but want to know what the benefits of having a programmer plugged into it are. Thanks TFFers! I know they make programmers for GAS engines, but not sure you see the benefit like you would on DIESEL engines. I have a Duramax and I'm getting much better fuel economy and almost 100 extra horsepower with my programmer. A friend from work has a gas Z71 and he said he wished he wouldn't have spent the money on a programmer as it didn't add that much h.p. and lucky if he gets 1/2 mpg better.

If you truly got 100 hp boost you should be very concerned about the longevity of your engine. On a percentage basis 100 hp is huge. What was the original hp? A number of people have blown their engines after using the programmers.

I've always wondered about some really high numbers like increase HP and torque which is great. But I've always wondered how they do long term and warranty wise.

A number of people have blown their engines after using the programmers. I've boosted mine up 90 horse, so I'm probably close to the 400 mark. I don't hot rod around. If you go too much higher, you need to get some transmission work done. The tranny will go before the motor does. Check out some of the diesel forums, you'd be surprised out how much hp some are running on their daily drivers.

I'm sure the mfgs will not warranty a "programmed" engine. I know on mine, I can hook the programmer up and "return to stock" tune if needed be.

I have an 08 Tundra Crewmax 4x4 w/ 5.7 and over the last 4,000 or so miles I am averaging 14.8 mpg for everything. I know because I have to keep track for work. This includes highway, around town, towing (750 miles of the 4,000), and my lead foot. I have been consistantly averaging around 18-19 on the highway and around 13-14 in town when not pulling. The 20mph on the highway is probably very easy to achieve if you are not as heavy footed as I am and driving a 2wd.

You can have a tune or a programmer. I had Edge Juice and had 120hp. My neighbor stacked his Edge Juice hot and A bully dog program and dyno'd at almost 500hp at the wheel, with a few other mods. I think it was like 700hp at the crank. He put a 100K miles on it and never had a problem, but he did have a Suncoast stage IV tranny. His truck ran high 12's.

I have a 08 Tundra Double Cab with the 5.7L V8 and I drive about 50K miles a year with my job. I have a Snug Top bed cover on mine and I get 20.6 with my cruise locked at 70. I have seen 21 if I lock my cruise at 60 mph. The 4.7L does not get as mileage as the 5.7 because the 5.7L shifts more.

I must be in one of those moods today. Come on and be realistic. When a guy asks for an mpg he wants reality not the 100 mile stretch on the freeway with the wind at your back. A 5.7 gas engine is not averaging 20 mpg consistently, especially not with a 4.3 rear end.
I have a 6.0L with 4.10 rear end and I can hit mid 20's for spurts with active fuel management. I average 15.9 all around with the 6.0L Vortec Max. Put a 2500lb plus boat on any 5.3 - 6.0 gas engine from any make and you will be hitting single digits up to mid teens depending on how you drive.
