Yeah LC. It's the soda straw thing. Works for smack on jetties and in surf. Just wondering if anyone tried it on fly rod. Seems like it would be easy enough.

I Googled this and all I could find were some sparse images. Is this just a hook with some plastic straw above it, as was mentioned earlier, tube fly style? That is low down, dirt cheap good old fashioned fun, the kind of thing that would probably be outlawed by B.A.S.S so it must be fun!

Well the way smacks tear up flies, I kinda like the idea of something cheap to throw at em.

I'm heading down in a few weeks. I'll give it a try and report back. Like you said, cheap is a goood thing with smacks.

Thats what i thought, no weight. I added a strip of metallic silver sili skin to straw by hook for a little flash. we'll see.

Those darn things'll eat anything eh? Interesting; I see things like this and I wonder who came up with it first and what was the story there.

I suspect it involved alcohol, a wager, desperation or any combo of the three.

id rather throw something cheap and easy to make, so it's less painful when i pop it off

Well, strapping some flashabou to a hook and tying it onto straight 30lb mono is about as cheap a fly as I know how to make, altho the straw rig definitely makes a run at it. The thing about this rig is it was developed for catching spanish mackerel, not the most discriminating fish in the sea. In situations like schooled up and blitzing whitebass/hybrids/stripers you might be able to get away with it, but I don't know many more situations where a straw on a hook will produce consistently.

but there is one upside, i can waste a lot more time tieing flies since they will be more complicated

Tying flies is NEVER a waste of time. It's good for the soul
