I've heard of people using it on spinning tackle. Maybe unweighted on a fly rod? Seems like a cheap way to go.

You meana section of a red & white spiraled soda straw? Don't see why not esp. when you're harassing the smackies off a jetty.

Yeah LC. It's the soda straw thing. Works for smack on jetties and in surf. Just wondering if anyone tried it on fly rod. Seems like it would be easy enough.

Well the way smacks tear up flies, I kinda like the idea of something cheap to throw at em.

Thats what i thought, no weight. I added a strip of metallic silver sili skin to straw by hook for a little flash. we'll see.

Those darn things'll eat anything eh? Interesting; I see things like this and I wonder who came up with it first and what was the story there.

I suspect it involved alcohol, a wager, desperation or any combo of the three.

Much like the pool stunt shown to us by Cole from This is Fly. I'm still game to be a 'fish'.

Or just throw a flash fly id rather throw something cheap and easy to make, so it's less painful when i pop it off but thanks for the advice what all would this work for though? and could i throw this in any freshwater?

Well, strapping some flashabou to a hook and tying it onto straight 30lb mono is about as cheap a fly as I know how to make, altho the straw rig definitely makes a run at it. The thing about this rig is it was developed for catching spanish mackerel, not the most discriminating fish in the sea. In situations like schooled up and blitzing whitebass/hybrids/stripers you might be able to get away with it, but I don't know many more situations where a straw on a hook will produce consistently.

Tying flies is NEVER a waste of time. It's good for the soul That, and it's the only kind of artistic expression I have that comes out half decent.

If the surf stays calm the smacks are going to be thicker than you can imagine in the next few months! A straw rig may be my go to rig lol!

Oh you know what scout, I bet ladyfish would hit them too... the straw could protect your tippet from getting worn to shreds by those sandpaper mouths! Okay, definitely going to have to try it now....

If the fish are on a feeding spree I bet anything feeding at that time will devour it. Another thought maybe just a 1/4 inch strip of straw and throw it in the green lights. It's small and would give a fishy silhouette, perhaps put some lead wrap to help get it down quick especially in the surf.

Fished the surf last weekend. Had intended to try straw rig but wind killed me. Caught a few smack but not on fly. Planning on going down in a few weeks to try again. If not windy I'm gonna try a straw rig. The smacks were full of shrimp in surf. A shrimp imit. of some type would probably work well.

I'd probably use a single hook and pinch down the barbs as that straw rig with a treble would be tough to get out of an ear or the back of your head.

Hooks in the back of the head or ears is good for the soul, builds fishing personality and helps understand what a fish goes through when we hook them!
Think like a fish, think like a fish, think like a fish LMAO!

Works like a champ, I have caught a ton of skip jacks from Florida to SPI on these things. Never had the chance to try em on Smacks .If you pre tie them with the knotable steel leader its even better. Have fun.
