Fished the E. Fork of the Trinity above Ray Hubbard today, with Cliff.
We got on the water at around 6:00AM at the Hwy 66 ramp and got to the mouth of the river around 6:30, right when the sun was just appearing. It was beautiful out there at that time, and we saw some shad activity. We cast poppers in the area but got no hits. Then I saw a big splash real close to the reeds, and I got a good cast with my white popper right in the area, and it got smashed by a pretty decent bass. The bass had real nice coloring, more orange than green in its coloring.
We kept working the area close to the mouth and nothing happening, so we went furthur. It looked like the fishing was beginning to pick up, we pulled in 4 or 5 small bass, Cliff also caught a black crappie, and I caught a nice bluegill. Then it quickly shut down. It was real slow for the rest of the morning, as we worked further up the river. We did catch around 12 nice size bluegill that Cliff kept. There are some pretty nice bluegill in there for sure. Later we caught a couple more small bass, and I had a nicer bass mouth my fly, but I missed the hookset. Later as we were working our way back out, I saw a fish by a log that I was sure was a carp at first, but then noticed the interesting tail. It was a bowfin. I quickly try to cast my marabou muddler to it but got it hung up on top of the log! bang
The bowfin spooked away. Oh well.
It was a bust from a species perspective. My main purpose was to try and catch at least of few of the following species for the txfishes.com contest:
- bowfin
- crappie(white/black)
- gar
- redear
- white bass
- yellow bass
- carp
- warmouth
All these fish we had either caught or seen the last trip there. I struck out. Well gotta try again I guess.

I cant get logged into txfishes for some reason (more than likely operator error) ans it doesnt really matter, I doubt I'll catch enough to be a contendor... so here are my present entries (3 from Red River & 3 from another place)

That's a good start Mike!

Hey how come the "politically correct" name now?

Still sounds like a pretty good day. Sorry you missed the species you were looking for... but at least you got some fishing in.

I didnt miss any species, actually that was secondary, I wanted to catch a bigger a Striper, but the Buffalo & Blue Cat were unexpected & a bonus.. that blue was my first catfish on a flyrod and I guess breaking the ice was needed, I was fishing for sunfish yesterday with my 3 weight when I caught a 3 lb channel cat. Dont mean to hijack this thread (I'm more mature than that)

Ah. Sorry, I was talking about Christian's go at the bowfin. I have been causing confusion wherever I go today. Must be Thursday.

sorry I should really stay on topic... yes, a bowfin would cetainly be a great catch for the HotterNHell contest there wont be many of those caught, especially on the fly.

Well a blue cat on the fly is a great catch.
I may have to break out the cut shad and spinning rod to go after blue cats.

Blue cat came at Red River and from what I've heard is not all the unexpected, funny thing is I had never caught a catfish of any kind on a fly until that one, and then yesterday I caught a 3 lb channel cat on a woolly booger while fishing for sunfish on my 3 weight.

A 3lb kitty must have been pretty interesting on your 3wt. Did she give your line a good sliming in the process?
