Yes 2001 5.4. I have been using Autolites. Pep Boys has been changing the plugs. I usually do my own but after watching my neighbor spend 8 hours on his 99 I said the heck with it. I have 92k on it. It gets driven fairly lightly here lately. Mixture of city and highway. Occasional long trip mixed in and some light trailer towing. Truck has had all the regular maint. and then some. I am on the 3rd set of plugs, fuel pump, new intake gasket set, 2 COPs, lower ball joints, de-carbon. Truck has used a quart of oil about every 2000k since new. Ford service manager says 1000 is not unusual. Other than mechnical this truck has exterior and interior paint issues. One bad one caused to me to defect. I use reg. unleaded.
Man I've been in meetings all day now I can get back to some slackin. Ok that answers alot of Q's first off use Motorcraft Platinum plugs Only. Several people I know including myself have had issues with any other plug that was not the MC's. For some reason these engines don't like anything else. Even though Autolite and MC is manufactured by Honeywell the Autolites are not made to the exact same Ford specs as the MC's. Also when the plugs are replaced it is very important to apply dielectric greas to the inside of the cop boots. Most of the guys including myself on the f150 forum have been replacing the cops with the one's sold by Global Automotive or Uneek Auto on Ebay. You can by a set of 8 for 85 bucks from Global with a lifetime warranty. I ended up with an extra set that I keep on hand in case of an emergency. Most everyone that I know that bought Accel's or MSD's or any other brand for that matter regreted the decision. The last cop we had to buy for one of our company service vans was $105 for one from Ford. So these are cheep insurance as well as I'm not a fan of buying the same ground more than once. Now this is just a personal opinion so just consider that but I don't let Pep Boys work on anything I own or anyone I consider my friends vehicles. I have some bad experiences not with just one store but several. On the oil consumption it is not unusual to hear that and Ford doesn't consider using a quart in 1500 miles excessive. Not my personal philosophy but have to understand it. Mine is a 97 and I change my oil every 2k mainly because it doesn't get driven that much and it might use a half pint in that time. One of my tech's wife has a 01 reg cab sb with the 5.4 and it was using a quart every 1k and that was mobil 1 since I told him to go back to the Motorcraft blended synth it now uses a quart in 2k and is a heck of alot cheaper. He also change the pcv with one from Ford and this last time he didn't say anything about using any. Things to remember sometimes it's ok to use aftermarket parts and sometimes not. I have recieved alot of good advice on my vehicles from F150online for my truck and dfwstangs for the daughters car forums just as I've gained alot of insight and knowlege from this forum alot of people out there that give their time up and provide alot of help. I just try and return the favor when I can. Truth be known all manufacturers have issues just depends on if you find out about it and can live with it. My wife works for a Toyota dealership and I'm a die-hard Ford guy and tell ya the dinner conversations can get entertaining for someone outside the circle. Not to mention when I show up in the blue oval to take her to lunch, it's all in good fun. Hope some of this helps and sorry I didn't intend to get long winded.
