Well, the Honey Creek chicken fried steak or pork loin sandwich with fries will run you $8.00. It's all I can handle, and I'm a svelte 240. There's some serious meat involved here.

I had the chicken fried steak at Abel's Diner in Schertz this evening. I've been eating breakfast there for years, but had never been there for dinner. Abel's is a little on the rustic side, and they should have replaced their floors years ago. Everything else, though, seems reasonbly tidy.
For starters, they brought me a green salad and a couple of warm yeast rolls (I understand these are served only after 5:00.) When the steak arrived, I took a close look at it. It was about 7" across, and maybe half an inch thick. The meat seemed to be a slice of high-quality round, with no fat or gristle. It was tender, but hadn't been "tenderized." The batter was light, and adhered well to the meat. This was served with a baked potato (loaded with real bacon) and sauted fresh spinach. All this was priced at $8.59, + tea and tax. For the price, about as good as it gets in Sanantone.

Mary's in Strawn, the CFS is cooked on a griddle. Is that the most authentic way to cook a CFS or from cast-iron skillet?

Everyone is talking about Mary's. I made many a Mary's trip during my Tarleton days for the all you can eat sirloin on Thursdays but never tried the CFS. I will certainly do that.
However, my personal favorite CFS happens to be very close to Mary's. It is the Smokestack out on I20 in Thurber just this side of Ranger Hill.
It is not fried to be super crispy and the breading is not to heavy. You can cut it easily with a fork. It looks much like the pictures of the Mary's version and considering it is so close I would not be surprised if they have a lot in common.
Looking forward to trying some of these other places. I was surprised with so many hunters heading west all the time that the Smokestack did not have any votes. Or at least I didn't see one. Maybe I am the only person that like their CFS.

No offense, Bankwalker, but the last time I ate at the Smokestack, which was circa 1999 or so, I had a very very poor experience. I would rather eat a frozen dog than I would eat at the Smokestack again -this is not one time there either but several. Across the street, now, at New York Hill is not bad.

Don't know if its still around, but when I was a kid, the Hungry Farmer in San Antonio.
Good Lord, that was the best CFS. I rate everyone since then to IT. Bigger than the platter and loads of mother lovin' gravy.

I fondly remember the Hungry Farmer in San Antonio. It's probably been 20 years since I've been there but I do recall it was great food.

I've said Mary's in Strawn before but I forgot to add that Monday Nights is all you can eat CFS. Coldest beer on Earth too.

Ate at Mary's in Strawn today after taking note of the earlier recommendation on this post. The CFS is awesome. Bought the medium size (1/2 lb.) and could barely eat it. I don't know a whole lot, but I do know chicken fried steak. This place is good. Cost only $10 with potato and salad. Homemade gravy, too. WH

The best I have had is the Country Inn. There are two of them, one just north of Lake Somerville and the Country Inn 2 on the north side of Brenham. I think the CFS is better in Somerville but if you are not a smoker, go to the one in Brenham. I don't know, maybe it is just because I would have a CFS after a long day of fishing and skiing on Somerville, but they are good and the portions are large. Country Inn, Somerville Country Inn 2, Brenham
