Unfortunately I only have a thousand pound tow capacity on my car but I really need a boat. And I don't want to get stuck on a ramp somewhere and have to be towed off. Hopefully this is the right area to ask this question.
If you have ever had your boat weighed, please help me out. I need to know how much your aluminum bass boats weigh (Bass Tracker type) with the trailer. Also your older model fiberglass bass boats with trailer. And even your older to newer (Skeeter type) bass boats. I am just trying to get a idea of what kind of weights I am looking at when searching. If you reply could you please add the year and model please.
Thanks!

A 20 ft fiberglass bass boat with a 225 and all gear with trailer will be in the 3500-4000 lb range

Aluminum would be the way to go. What kind of car do you have?

I dont mean to sound like a a-hole. But are you sure you want to be towing ANYTHING with that car? I think a big jon boat would be about all you could really pull. Might consider using a kayak or canoe. I know that a trailer will weight 400 lbs or so for a 14' boat. The boat itself will weight 200-400lbs, and then your motor will weight 75-200lbs depending on what size ya go with. Plus batteries, coolers, tackle, and HOPEFULLY a lot of fish on the way out. You might not be able to get it back up the ramp.
A 'yak would not have these problems since you will more than likely strap it to the top, and you can only fit so much inside of one of these.

Nick, I'm afraid FishHauler is right. If you are really gonna tow something with that car, you'll want to look at a simple jon boat at the very most. I'm pretty sure Tracker does not make a boat/trailer combo that is less than 1000 lbs. I looked at weight hard when I was shopping since my little truck maxes at 3500 lbs.
I've also watched front wheel drive vehicles try to pull boats out at the ramp and they constantly spin the tires and have a heck of a time with it.
Just for reference, the towing weight on my Tracker is almost 1700 lbs. empty. Add in gas, gear and stuff and it's probably 2100 or so lbs.
Good luck!
Jason

Thanks guy's. I have been searching specifically for 14-16 ft modified V hull "Jon" type boat for some time now. But I just wanted to see if there were any other options because I need a more stable boat. I know a Sonata isn't exactly the ideal tow vehicle, but it's all I have to work with for now.

I checked out the Tracker website for ya. The smallest package deal I found is the Pro 16 w/ 25 hp outboard. The Package weight listed is 1,272 lbs. You can probably find a 14 ft jon w/about 20 hp motor in you weight range. See the Specs below: Length 16' 1'' Beam 70" Transom Height 20" Bottom Width 48" Max. Recommended HP 30 HP Max. Person Capacity 3 Persons Max. Person Weight 435 Lbs. Max. Weight Capacity 855 Lbs. Hull Material 0.090 5052 Marine Alloy Weight (approx.) 665 Lbs. Fuel Capacity 6 Gallons Package Length 19' 6'' Package Width 6' 4'' Package Weight (approx.) 1272 Lbs.

Thanks Joe. I was having a heck of a time finding exact weights for boats. I checked that website and found the "Guide V14 Riveted Deep V". I think that might be what I'm looking for. Now to just find a good used one.

The problem is the weight on the back of the car takes weight off the front. The other issue is the tranny. I would not tow anything with a front wheel drive because the tranny's just are not that tough.

please don't pull with that car, as a truck driver for alot of years I can't count the number of wrecks I saw (the aftermath)due to people pulling something the car couldnt stop. if you exceed 3/4 of the rated pulling capacity your gonna have a real hard time stopping at hiway speed due to the car not having enough "mass" to resist the boat pushing you. ask anyone on here with a half ton pu that pulls a 20-21' boat and without brakes it aint easy. I pull a 19' champion/175 johnson with a dodge quad cab and no brakes on the trailer, I allow three extra lengths for emergency stops (this with 4 wheel abs). Think real long and call your insurance company to see if they are gonna cover it.

if your going to spend good money on a boat get a used 4x4 truck. it doesnt have to be a good looking vehicle at all. all it has to do is be mechanically sound and cheap. it is going to be harder and harder to find trucks in the near future with the american people having put the village idiot in charge of GM and Chrysler now may be the time to do it if your gonna do it at all.

Boat + trailer = under 900lbs...and the trailer is 700lbs. Sure one of those harbor freight trailers would weigh 300lbs. Inflatable pontoons are very light.
