Mustang Island State Park

Anyone have any info. We want to camp on the beach and surf fish. Is this a pretty cool place to do this? I have made a Port A trip the last few years and camped on the Causeway and had fun and caught a few, but we want to surf fish this time.

Do you think this weekend coming up will be crazy packed with folks in the parks, and fishing would be trouble with the crowds?

Also, we are not college kids on Spring Break, but we do want to have a beer or two around the campfire. The TPWD site has this statement:

"Public consumption or display of an open container of any alcoholic beverage is prohibited."

This seems a little vague. Does this mean that you can have alcohol in your possession and drink it out of a plastic cup that doesn't look like alcohol?

I thought about heading South to PINS. I do have 4WD, but it's a soccer mom SUV and PINS sounds a bit scary for driving, and I like the fact that the state park was restrooms and beach showers. We are tent camping, so I rinse off every every now and then would be nice.

Any info or insight is appreciated. I'm counting the days!!!!

Try the IB Magee Beach Park in Port A. It's on the beach. It's got awesome showers and bathrooms really close to the jetty and it's BEER friendly. As long as it's not glass you're golden. I've been staying there for the past 8 years and it's great. Good luck.

If you want a camp site in the park you better make reservations far in advance. The campgrounds at the park basically consist of a paved lot in the dunes with each site marked off on the pavement. Each site has electrical hookups, water and a covered picnic table. Restrooms and showers are in the camping area.

As far as the alcohol restrictions go, they are the same with all state parks. I poor my beverage into an insulated mug. If you're walking around with a beer can or bottle don't be surprised if a ranger asks you to put it away. That said, if you don't attract attention to yourself then probably won't have to be bothered by the ranger.

Surf fishing that area can be quite good. However, depended on how crowded the beach is, you may have to contend with swimmers running through your lines.

You can also try I.B. Magee County Park in Port A. They also have facilities and are near the jetties.

Padre Island Nat. Seashore does not have electric or water hookups but they do have showers and restrooms and camping facilities in the campground. Or you can rough it and head down the beach somewhere. You can normally go beyond the 5 mile marker with two wheel drive. Sometimes a lot farther, just depends on beach conditions.

Try to reserve a paved spot, My wife and I have tried camping on the beach twice and ended up sleeping in the truck ( the tent could not stand up to the wind)

Life is a beach, i'm just playing in the sand.

Thanks for the info. Two votes for I.B. Magee, so we might have to check that out.

Leaving in the morning and I am PHYCED!
