Might head to the lake this afternoon.. weekend is kind of if-y but sure would like to have a coordinated assault of the upper end of Lake Somerville reel soon.. that way we can really see if the bass are biting and where...

Here's what I've been fishing for. My buddy and I put 27 bass in the boat on 2-2-12.

This one hit my top water bait. It was somewhere in the four and a half to five pound range.

And of course you can see what this one hit because it’s still hooked in its mouth. I’m guessing somewhere in the lower four pound range.

Good news. Everything here was flooded last night. The Yegua should be on the rise once again. I can see where it will be much higher than last time due to the amount of rain that feel in such a short period of time. The police and fire department was out last night helping stranded folks get out of their cars.
We received four and one tenths yesterday. So, let the Yegua flow.........
PS: There may be a white bass run after all.

I suspect the whites will begin as soon as the flood waters hit the lake.. that might mean from right now and until the waters recede next week.. pending more rain.. they might even get trapped up the creeks like they did in 2009.. so prepare your late season creek trips now!

I came from the airport in Austin this morning and there is a lot of flooding. Should hopefully bring the lake up at least one foot, but there are a lot of flat areas that will be hard to cover.

College Station received about 5.25".

The radio station here in Rockdale is reporting 5.2 inches.

And yes, if this much water is going down the creek, whites will come up stream to spawn even if the lake is low. It's going to be weird year.

Remember this from April 25, 2009?

Last week the lake got lots of rain and it flooded the creeks and brought the lake up to near pool (238ft) In normal years the whitebass have finished spawning in the creeks by early April but this year the fish just couldn't make the trip. I really though that the rain was too late to do any good but I was dead wrong. Two fishing buddies and I kayaked up into the Yegua Saturday expecting to catch black bass but the creek is still stained from the rain. We paddled up to the newmans bottom area and on the third cast caught the first of many whitebass. Every deep pool around shallow rapids held whitebass. Between the three of us we caught upwards of 60 fish. Most were smaller males but still real fun on fly gear. We kept switching back and forth between flys and roostertails but if we had stayed with spinning gear only we really could have mopped up.

But with the weather forecast of rain and colder temps not sure what to do... popcorn2
But Saturday is looking like the best day to go fishing for sure,(so far)... thumb
And with a low of 45 degrees on Friday morning, might try Circleville early morning if it's not raining... bang
Then, maybe try Nails or Yegue in the afternoon. juggle

Anyone been to the Yeagua to check it out? Is Newmans closed due to wet roads?

Yesterday newmans bottom was closed. The park rangers tell me that when the water from the creek hits what once was the lake it spreads out and is very shallow( less than 6" of water).

yes it does but the surge of flood water from the Yegua would have presented a short window of opportunity for the whites to make the run into the creek.. I HOPE!

With the main lake being up, there would be some good spots other than creeks to catch WB, right?

Yep. But they typically can be caught easier in the creeks first, then the lake action starts a bit later. (On an at pool or near pool level spring run yr.)
When no creek run is possible, or if they don't make it to the creeks then they start staging up near windblown humps that create a "consistent current/flow" over the shallow humps.

This time of year you can start catching Hybrids shallow on the windblown flats. It is a hit or miss but they are chasing bait in the shallows in various size schools. You can see them breaking surface and running the bait down the shorelines. Every so often you can get a good LMB in with them. banana

I can bring it back down. I'm at my parents house this weekend so it's no problem. With the recent rain, I'd be up for heading out if I had time. Just need a fishing license...
