With all the rain last week that flooded the creeks and gave this area of Texas some relief from the drought I just had to go see what the creek fished like.. smile Thought there might be some whitebass but no such luck.... BUT

First bass of the day is probably a Personal best on the fly rod.. and would break the current lake record on the fly.

Water clear; 3.31’ low. Black bass are slow. Hybrid striper are slow. White bass are fair on minnows and shad. Crappie are slow. Channel and blue catfish are slow. Yellow catfish are slow.

thats a pretty good change from last weeks reports. who knows...run may be stopping soon...>;[

Good fight for sure but the creek didn't afford the bass much room to go very far So I just had to hang on until she tired out..

I was thinking of fishing Sommerville tomorrow. Do yall think that there will be whites or catfish in the creeks or should I go somewhere on the main lake?

I had figured that the whitebass spawn was a total bust for Lake Somerville because of the drought and the rains coming so late... I WAS WRONG! Last week the lake got lots of rain and it flooded the creeks and brought the lake up to near pool (238ft) In normal years the whitebass have finished spawning in the creeks by early April but this year the fish just couldn't make the trip. I really though that the rain was too late to do any good but I was dead wrong. Two fishing buddies and I kayaked up into the Yegua Saturday expecting to catch black bass but the creek is still stained from the rain. We paddled up to the newmans bottom area and on the third cast caught the first of many whitebass. Every deep pool around shallow rapids held whitebass. Between the three of us we caught upwards of 60 fish. Most were smaller males but still real fun on fly gear. We kept switching back and forth between flys and roostertails but if we had stayed with spinning gear only we really could have mopped up.

Nails creek might hold some fish too and it's not so far to kayak.. The wind Saturday really kicked our butts getting back to the boat ramp.. I might walk back into Nails Creek on Tuesday late afternoon if I get the chance but thats the only afternoon I can spare right now..
