I went down to west beach, just past pirates beach, and tried my hand at surf fishing. I caught 3 reds to 27", and 6 specks to 25" on 4-5" finger mullet. There were some newly created pools with all the finger mullet you need. I just waded out past the first bar to cast and let the rods sit. I was really looking for some reds, so I was surprised to land a few specks.

galveston fishing pier will rebuild a portion of the pier ! talked to the folks at smittys bait camp!
went to seawolf this past friday landed 4 flattys 2 to 3 pounds each. The flounder are definatly there!
also came home with a buket full of nice size sandtrout!
best bite is on a moving tide.

surfrfishing, I am planning on heading to Seawolf this weekend. This will be my first time to fish for flounder there...were you on the west side of the park/point? What were you using to haul in those flatties...mud minnows, shrimp, jigs, etc? I appreciate any tips.

Does anyone know of a bait shop that sells mud minnows close to Seawolf, or do I need to stop and chunk my cast net before launching the boat...

GO TO THIS WEBSITE FOR MORE INFORMATION:
http://galvestondailynews.com/story.lasso?ewcd=a2271c6f3d547389

PER Galveston Daily News:

"We continue to receive calls asking for updates on the plans to rebuild the commercial fishing piers around the island. Although we have not heard of any timetables, the Seawolf Park Pier, 61st Street Fishing Pier and the Flagship Fishing Pier all have plans to rebuild. The San Luis Pass Fishing Pier has partially reopened we understand, and no word on the Galveston Fishing Pier."

Most of the fishing piers will take time to get back into operation and my guess is that it will be next summer before we see much progress.

THIS INFORMATION WAS LISTED ON THE GALVESTON NEWS WEBSITE..I HAVE NO IDEA IF THIS IS TRUE OR NOT!!!

Regarding getting bait,
I use this product and have no problem using my cast net, even with a bad back.

They are also sold at Cabela's....

Regarding the SLP pier...I checked their website and they are not open:

"There was a report in the Galveston Daily News that our pier was partially opened. That report is incorrect. We are not open. It is not yet safe! Please do not attempt to fish from the pier at this time. We are however, organizing a volunteer event to salvage as many pylons, lights, decking etc that we can and do some demo work on parts that can't be salvaged. Any help will be appreciated. There is no restrooms or electricity. We will be bringing our lunch and drinks and generators and tools. For any other information please see the message board under News and Announcements"

12/25/2008

The pier is closed due to hurricane damage.

Volunteer event planned for pier salvage work on January 17th and 18th

Can anyone tell me about the canal system in Jamaica Beach? Was it hit hard by the hurricane? Me and some friends are coming down there at the end of next month and plan to fish the canals at night for specks. Any report would be great.

I have not seen it for myself, but from what I have read there is a ton of underwater obstacles. Washers, dryers, telephone poles, cars, ect... Everything blew from the island and peninsula into the channels and canals.

I went by the 18th st pier in San Leon last week, just to look. The bar is up and running, looks great. There was a little barge with a crane anchored at the foot of the pier skeleton. Looks like they are getting to work on it.
